Bird #3 Mutation Confirmation

Next is a little girl I thought was just a beauty. I didn't really want to bring the clearflight gene into my flock because it's dominant, but she was too cute to pass up!

My guess with her is maybe a Skyblue Cinnamon, YF2, SF Violet. Could be so many different mutations. Oh, and she's got the cute little crest too!

I know this isn't exactly on topic...but are you trying to breed crested into the birds? Or produce a crested?

No, not at all. I havent ever even done the first bit of research or studying about this gene. These two unrelated birds simply happened to have this trait. I forgot to mention the obvious too about the females clearflight pied gene when I was guessing her mutation.

Aww! Was hoping to have a few opinions of this girl when I came back. She's got me quite unsure and need the experts for sure on this one!

I think yellow face (type 1) cinnamon sky blue. Not sure about the violet, i dont think you can tell til they breed?? (unsure though on that side)

Gorgeous bird though :)

Hi MallyKat! Thank you for your opinion! I know she must be type 2 YF because (even though it's hard to see this in the photos) she has yellow running through her wings. The violet is definitely the hard part here. She's also clearflight pied, and I agree about the cinnamon skyblue part.

it is hard to see in pictures but i would think she is violet!

yf2 violet dominant pied? but could be clearflight pied instead... it is the patch of white down on her belly that makes me think dominant pied. clearflights are more likely to have patches up high, connected to the mask.

You know, I think you are right about that. I didn't even consider dominant pied once I had clearflight in my head. The separated patch on her belly is in exactly the place it would be if she were dominant pied. Either way they are both dominant mutations, and more similar than I realized when a dominant is lightly pied.

Thanks for your opinion here - even though I'm not a "breeder" I really like knowing as best as possible the actual mutation of my birds.

A bird can be both clearflight and dominant pied.

tonic 07-01-2010 06:45 PM

yes they can be both.... it would be a less likely option though so unless you knew the parents i would go with one or the other.

ofcourse, i have not had any with both varieties in one bird so there may be an obvious way to tell that i do not know about....
