Quick question about YF2 mutation
I have a YF2 blue recessive pied. He's gone through a good molt and I was expecting him to be more seafoam green than blue, but his belly patch is as blue as it ever was. Is it only the sky blues that turn that green color. I think he may be greywing. If so, that would mean his body color is diluted and he may be a cobalt instead of a sky blue, right? My question is, do all YF2 birds turn that sea green color? Many thanks.
yellowface is a very tricky trait to breed but the first thing to know is that type 1 and type 2 only describe the appearance (phenotype) of the bird and not its genetic makeup (genotype). There are actually 3 genes that can produce the yellowface trait. 2 of these are likely to produce the seafoam green you're looking for.
Any yellow on the body automaticly makes him a type 2. If he wasn't reccesive pied those areas would have appeared greenish.
the yellow in yf2 washes down varying amounts and in varying strengths. some birds turn very green, some only have a hint of green part way down their body.
the areas that are yellow on his bodywould look greenish if there was blue there.
No not all YF2 birds have seafoam green in their feathers ;)
Most pieds dont turn seafoam , while a non-pied like a YF2 Cobalt will have seafoam feathers.
It really depends on where the blue is located , YF2's normally have yellow leaked onto the wing feathers and chest . Most pieds have blue on their lower bellies like yours, therefore the blue will stay.
