Default Feather question

Not sure if this should be in this section, but wasn't sure where else to put it.

Another moulting question!

I have noticed a change in Maya's feathers since her moult started, and thought I would ask about it. Starting in October, her new cheek patch feathers are coming in white, rather than violet. When I first got her, her cheeks were a deep violet, and now the new feathers are coming in white or a very, very light violet. All of the other new feathers are normal in color, the change is just in the cheek patches. Is this normal? Or is her diet lacking in something? Stress?

I'm attaching some pictures for comparison.

#1: The day that I brought her home at about 9 weeks old. Note the deep violet cheek patches.

#2: Mid-October, just shy of 5 months old. Some white, but still has the violet.

#3: Tonight, at just over 5 months old. Most of the new feathers are now white. There are many more pinnies to go....

Thanks all! I'm sure I'm worrying over nothing, but I'd rather ask and put my mind to rest. Lol.

Yea, Maybe you should put this in the mutation area only because it may have to do with factors...Perhaps white is a strong gene and is now coming out? Also, she looks strange in the last photo, almost like a French Molt bird...No worries, maybe its just the photo, but her feathers look very fluffy so to speak, but it could be the molting..

She is very pretty!!! Nice colors!!

Hmm, that is a good idea. Any idea how to move the thread without reposting? I don't want to spam the board.

She was indeed very fluffy in that pictures because she was settling down for a nap on my shoulder right before I took it. Also we just got home from a holiday trip and the heat isn't quite at temp yet. So, yeah. Fluffy little girl. Lol. That picture was also taken with my new iPhone at very close range, which may throw things off a bit. Hope that is all it is. Lol.

I'm so glad that you liked her! I agree that Maya is a very pretty girl. I love spangles and her markings and colors are gorgeous. I can't wait to see what she is going to look like after the marathon moult finishes.

Really? That's very interesting. I wonder if it is a characteristic of spangles. I hadn't thought about that. I'll have to do some digging. Thanks!

It is completely normal for the spangle mutation They can have violet, white or a mix of both in their cheek patches

Spangle is actually a pied gene which removes pigment from select places on the feathers, leaving the beautiful inner black edging that make spangles so pretty. When the spangle gene effects the cheek patches it causes them to go from the normal violet, to white

I never knew that about spangles before. So glad that one of our experts saw the post. That is so interesting! Are the patches likely to stay white or can they switch back? I think she is pretty either way, so just curious. Thanks so much for the info!

Sorry for the delay in seeing this. End of semester crush is trying to drive me mad. Lol.
