Default Brand New Budgie

Hello everyone!

I purchased my Budgie from PetSmart 5 days ago. This bird is my very first pet that I am raising, (Not just me but my brother and I are both raising it together). The bird is 2 months old and at the moment we do not know if its a male or female so we decided to give it a unisex tamil name (Kanna). My dad really wanted us to name it using a tamil name. I'd like to describe the first 5 days and I hope someone can tell me how everything is going based off of what I describe! If anyone comments and helps me out I greatly appreciate it

DAY 1:

We opened the box and let the bird into its cage (fairly big cage that is fit for 1-3 small birds). The first thing Kanna did was cling onto the back of the cage which was facing the wall for approximately 15-20 mins. Then a while later it climbed up the cage and saw a perch that was set up high and jumped onto it. We provided it food (seeds) and fresh filtered water (thought we'd give the pets water that we drink). My brother placed a cover that covered only one side. He tried covering the top but it got agitated so we decided not to cover the top. The rest of the night it stayed in one spot and did not move (I usually close my room door when i sleep, but that night I kept it open so I could hear if the bird started flapping around. (All the lights were turned off). Kanna seemed fine.

DAY 2:

Next morning I woke up and saw that the seeds were not touched. Ive read that not to be confused with a full bowl because budgies leave seed hulls behind. So what I did was go stand outside and blew onto the bowl, but nothing flew. I knew the bird did not eat at all. I cleaned its water bowl and food bowl and replaced with fresh seeds and fresh filtered water. Because my brother and I had to go to a wedding, we decided to play soft music for the bird to calm it down. After approximately 3 hours later after the wedding was over and we came home. We checked if Kanna ate any food. Again it did not eat anything. Its poop changed from a dark green to a lighter green and some white. My brother and I got a little worried because we did not know that budgies take a while to try out their food as they are still afraid. So we went to a vet hospital to talk to someone and ask them questions on what we should do. One of the doctors had told us the poop was ok (took a picture and showed him). We then talked about what Kanna had been doing and that Kanna didnt eat anything. The doctor then told us to try moving the cage to some other quieter, secluded room (a guest room). We got home and moved Kanna to the guest room and then covered the top as well as the side of the cage (this time Kanna was not agitated by the top cover. Now the cage was covered except for the front of the cage. One side and the back of the cage was covered by the wall, top and another side was covered by the cloth we had placed over it. A few hours later we started to hear seed crunching sounds and deduced that Kanna finally started eating! 24 hours later and it finally started to eat. Note that we do not know if it drank any water. During the night we turned off all the lights and kept the rooms door slight open for air circulation. Kanna did not make a noise.

DAY 3:

Replaced the food bowl (with a lot of hulls this time) as well as the water bowl. Till now Kanna had not chirped. I heard that playing other Budgie sounds was ok for the bird so I tried it out, and then it got really excited that it started flapping its wings around and jumped onto the front of the cage and tried poking its head out to see where the sound was coming from. It was flapping around so much, I got a little scared and thought I should stop playing the music. I then put on soft music and it calmed down. Kanna continued eating and finally started trying out his/her other perches. Kanna loves the top perch as well as the sand perch. Later that day, Kanna finally started chirping. Till now we dont know if Kanna drinks its water from the water bowl.

DAY 4:

Kanna continues to eat the Spray millet we hung near its favorite perch. Kanna would also eat its seeds. Though it wouldnt eat infront of me, it eats infront of my brother. Kanna seems to like certain parts of the soft music we play because whenever that part comes or gets repeated, Kanna likes to chirp to that. Today was also the first time we heard Kanna screetch. Sounds like ACK! ACK! Thought Kanna was trying to say something to us. Later that day I sat by Kanna and was on my laptop, but my back was facing him/her. I turned my head to see kanna facing the other side of the cage and his/her back facing my back. Note Kanna was near its food bowl. I then got up and faced towards the front of the cage and bobbed my head around to the music.. Kanna turned around then slowly walked over to the food bowl and started eating (infront of me! this is the first time). After 3 mins, my grandma accidentally dropped a plate downstairs and it startled Kanna. Kanna then jumped off the food bowl and onto the perch nearest to it. (Still dont know if Kanna is drinking water). Later that day when I started to clean the liners (I clean then thoroughly everyday), Kanna noticed the bottom moving and started to freak out and jumped around and fell to the bottom of the cage (fell onto its feet). So I stopped moving the bottom part. Kanna then finally jumped onto the bottom perch and then made its was to the ladder, climbed up the ladder and then onto a perch in the middle of the cage and stood there. I then continued to pull out the liner bottom part. Kanna then wobbled over to the food bowl and started eating again. I then cleaned the bottom and placed clean liners again. This time we placed a night lamp and faced the light onto the ground so it wouldnt be too bright for kanna. I played soft music and then around 2 hours later i stopped the music and let it sleep (not sure if its sleeping).

DAY 5:

This is today. I replaced Kannas Seeds and then it immediately started eating. So I sat there so Kanna could feel safe (with soft music playing). For the longest time Kanna was chirping (each day his/her chirping got louder, with different variations in loud chirps and quiet murmuring chirps and Screeches. Then Kanna would stop, then a while later it would do it again and again taking breaks and doing it again. Today Kanna tried out a couple of its toys, but not fully..just tugged at a bell, and lifted a flap and let it go.

STUFF THAT I NOTED WHILE WATCHING KANNA:

In the morning whenever I replaced the food and water, Kanna pulls out a single feather. It looks like a baby feather though. The feather underneath the green feather, therefore it looks white. I also noticed that whenever Kanna preens, it shakes all its feathers like a bristle of some sort and a few small tiny feathers fall out in the process. Kanna likes to grind/scratch its beak onto the sand perch. It doesnt seem to want to sit on the bottom perch. Never seen Kanna drinking water so not sure if it drinks the water. Today I placed watermelon pieces so it can eat the fruit and get some water in it. But it hasnt touched it at all.

Thats all friends, hopefully someone makes due of this and knows how everything is going with kanna

Hi there, and welcome to the forum!

It sounds like you're doing a fantastic job of looking after Kanna.
I like the patience that you are demonstrating, in allowing your little budgie to settle in at his/her own pace, well done!

Budgies don't drink very much, so don't worry there. He/she will be drinking, just quickly.
Playing music is great, though try not to play budgie sounds as it's confusing and a bit of a tease as their attention will be fixed on finding those budgies.

You can move the cage back into a more busy area (if you haven't already), just try to find a spot where the cage's back is against a wall and he/she will be able to see people approaching (i.e. Not right beside a door way).

There is a lot of information within this forum but here are a few stickies that you may find useful to read through for now:

We love photos, so when Kanna is a bit more settled, it would be great if you could post a photo. If you can get a clear image of Kanna's cere taken in daylight without flash, then members will be able to tell you his/her gender too!

Hello Julia!

Thanks for the reply! I am trying to take care of Kanna like it were my own child! Of course I will post images!! I took a few pictures but im not sure you can tell by looking at the cere in that angle. After posting the topic, I tried moving my finger outside of the cage up and down, Kanna seemed to give no reaction at all, just kept staring at the finger.

Hi there and to the forums!

It sounds like Kanna is doing wonderfully so far! S/he's probably drinking when you're not watching. It's great to hear that s/he's comfortable enough to eat now

I look forward to seeing photos of your little one when you get a chance!

Meanwhile, you've come to the best place to learn even more about budgies! Be sure to read through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on all the best practices for budgie care.

If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask!

Cheers

Default Go Budgies!

Thank you Deborah and StarlingWings for your replies!

I cant wait to show Kanna to everyone. I have a small feeling Kanna will be a male because the cere from white is slowly turning a blue-ish grey colour..i could be wrong though..so once he/she is 100% comfortable around me, I'll take a picture and upload it

Actually, a white or light blue cere actually means you have a gorgeous little girl!

Young males have bright pink or purplish ceres which turn dark blue as they get older.

Without photos, we can't say for sure, but I think you most likely have a pretty little girl I can't wait to meet her!

Doesnt matter what gender, kanna will always be loved we are thinking about getting a new budgie within a month or two..depending if kanna gets more closer with us or if it gets bored...btw I finally saw Kanna drinking water!! Not infront of me, but i was quietly standing outside of the room kanna is in and peeked in, after eating, jumped onto the rope perch, then jumped onto the water bowl and dunked its beak into the water!! Also heads up, Kanna doesnt seem to want to go to the lower parts of the cage where the original water bowl is..we have two in there, one closer to the food bowl up top and the one that came with the cage at the bottom.. our cage is set up like that..one bowl up top and one at the bottom

Budgies like to stay up high in the cage- you should try to move the bowls down to make Kanna use all of the space s/he has, once Kanna is more comfortable of course. You can also put foraging toys on the bottom to see if Kanna wants to check those out.

Tried giving Kanna a mist spray bath today, but it didnt seem to like it..kept running away.. we noticed at the top of the head there were pin feathers, so thought it would be itchy, therefore wanted to give kanna a bath right away.. if it doesnt like the spray, should we buy a bird bath?
