Default A little nervous. ..

I picked out my new buddy a few days ago and was all excited to have a bird in the house again. We were careful to be calm around "Sidney," let him settle in,and initiate a good routine for him. All seemed to be going well for the first few days. I never saw him drink but he was in the food and rummaging in it. He was even starting to come to the corner of the cage to be talked to and head scratched after only about 2.5 days. The bad news is that we found him dead in the bottom of his cage last night after only 4 days of bringing him home. Today I went back to the store, a well-known pet store, and picked out "Sunshine." I cleaned the cage with vinegar and hot water before putting Sunshine into it. My concern is how do I avoid another death? I have owned a Gray and a 'tiel and never had this problem. Sunshine has let me move him onto a perch with my finger but has yet to eat or drink. I do have a portion of the cage covered with a towel to give him/her some security.

Hi there and to the forums!

I'm very sorry for the unexpected loss of your first little bird.

Sometimes there are genetic defects, hidden illnesses, or other unexpected causes, like a heart attack or stroke, for the sudden death of a little one. You did all the right things for Sidney, and it's good that you've taken precautions with the cage for your new little bird.

Sunshine should settle in more and more each day, giving him two weeks without trying to touch or tame him so he can get used to his new home is ideal. To make him more comfortable, you can also play some soft music in the background for him.

You've come to a great place to learn even more about budgies! Be sure to read through the forums as there are hundreds of useful articles and "stickies" which will help you stay updated on the very best of budgie care practices!

If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask!

We look forward to seeing you and your little budgie around the forums!

Cheers

Thanks. Just wanted to verify that I was in the right track. I will play the music for him/her and also the rainforest CD that I have. My hubby calls it talking to the cousins. Grin.

Hi Cathy and to Talk Budgies

I'm verry sorry for your loss of little Sidney.
Unfortunately, big box pet stores obtain their birds from "birdie mills" where the health of the budgies is the least of the breeders concern.
Birdie Mills are only in the business to make a profit - quantity rather than quality.

I hope you will have much better luck with little Sunshine. You've been given excellent advice so far.

Please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

Default Thank you all

First for making me seem so welcome and secondly for not thinking me "nuts" for being concerned over "just a parakeet." In the last six months I have now lost 3 pets (two dogs - one to old age and one to attacking a neighbor's dog) and Sidney. I really am almost afraid to lose another one. But, good news. I was sitting here working (I am a transcriptionist from home) and happened to see Sunshine on the food dish rummaging around. We were all gone for a while this morning and I played some nature CDs for him and it seems to have helped. Right now he is sitting watching me type and my husband play the PS4 - they seem to LOVE the colors and sounds from the games. I will keep you up to date on how things are going.

You should never feel "nuts" about being upset over "just a parakeet".

All life is precious and treasured and is in no way inferior to another. Simply because a budgie costs $20 at the pet store does not make it any less deserving of love and care than a dog, cat, more expensive bird, or any other animal.

Nobody gets to make you feel that you are in some way "crazy" for showing love, kindness, empathy, and devotion to any animal simply because it doesn't fit "their standards" for which pets "deserve it". All animals deserve it.

I'm glad Sunshine is warming up to his new home!

Cathy,

On this forum, there is no such thing as "just a parakeet".

As StarlingWings pointed out, we believe these beautiful creatures are valuable, worthy and just as important as any other pet whether they cost hundreds of dollars or were free.

I once had a budgie die the day after I brought him home from the breeder.
I had watched his progression through pictures from an egg to the beautiful chick I was fortunate to bring home.
When I found he had passed that very first night, I cried as though I had had him with me for years rather than for less than just one day.
The only conclusion was that the little fellow must have a genetic defect.

I have 9 budgies at this time and each and everyone of the has his/her own unique personality, temperament and habits.
They are all loved tremendously.

I hope Sunshine will be sharing your life for many years to come and will bring you much joy.

We'll look forward to hearing all about Sunshine and seeing lots more pictures in the days to come.
