Hi all. We just picked up our very first budgie. Can you tell if it's a boy or girl and age guess? Is it okay if it just sits on the bottom of the cage? We've been reading all the stickies but the coloring is so random on this one that I don't know what we have.

In the pic the cere looks very pink but then other times in different lighting it has a blueish tinge. How can you tell?

Hi! to Talk Budgies

I cannot get your thumbnails to expand so I can't see the budgie's cere.

Picture for determining gender such be taken in natural light - no flash and no direct sunlight.

When you upload pictures as thumbnail attachments directly from your computer, tablet or phone, the forum automatically defaults to landscape.

To upload full-sized pictures with the proper orientation, please use a photo-sharing service such as Imgur and follow the steps in these instructions:
How to Post Full Size Pictures from a Photo Sharing Site

By the way, all photos entered in any of our forum contests must be a full-size photo and not a thumbnail attachment so it's good to know how to upload them!

Please take the time to read through the Site Guidelines, all of the How To Guides, the FAQs, the Budgie Articles and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

Truly, the very BEST advice anyone can offer you is to take the time to read ALL of the stickies throughout the various Talk Budgie forums as well as the Budgie Articles we have posted.

These are great resources for Talk Budgie members and have a wealth of reliable information which will assist you to learn the best practices in caring for your budgies for their optimal health and well-being.

Unfortunately, I can't get it open that way either. This is one of the reasons I hate thumbnails. Full size pictures are so much simpler to view!

I have a relatively new iMac with a very large screen and your budgie looks like a beautiful young female. The slightly pink cere looks to be very whitish which is characteristic of a young female ~4 months. A photo with natural day-light should help confirm. One of the mutation experts can identify this color mutation. Give her plenty of time to settle in and gain your trust.

TY! If she is a female we are naming her Luna. She's been mostly sitting on the bottom of the cage since we brought her home a few hours ago (when I originally posted). But she actually flew up onto the front bars a few minutes ago and was chirping for a few minutes. Pretty good sign I think. But I know nothing lol.

She's very a faded blue or gray (hard to tell) with a yellow face. What mutation is that?

! Luna is a cute bird! You have been given excellent advice so far.

Here are a few tips for you since you just got your bird and the amount of info can be overwhelming. As as been recommended, read as much as you can and do ask questions. For the first two weeks, you should let your bird get settled. She will be frightened at first and needs time to get used to you and her new surroundings. Do talk to her, read to her, sing to her, hang out near her cage. Do be sure she has a healthy diet and start her on pellets if possible. Do no try to handle her. Once she has settled in, you can start trying to tame her. For now, helping her feel safe is the most important. Hope that is helpful!

Best of luck with your new friend!
