Default My New Budgie! What Color Variation? Age?

I just got a new Budgie!!!!!

I've owned 3 in the past, they all lived for 6-10 years. So, after my bereavement period.. I decided to get another little birdie

I am perplexed by her color. I can't seem to pin-point it exactly, I know that she probably has diluted color gene, white base (obvi), and a grey factor... but I have no clue.

Can anyone give me more information?
ALSO any other comments/opinions would be awesome, I am so excited to bring this girl home.
Age too... I know shes young, i think because her eyes are all black.

Her name is River, I made that official as of one minute ago hahaha.

(I know she doesnt look very happy, but remember... I bought her only a few hours ago.)

Hi Katie and to the forums!

Your budgie is gorgeous! From the photo, he is actually a boy, if it's true that his cere is pink with no white. I think River is a great name for him!

He is a grey opaline recessive pied budgie

Meanwhile, you've come to the very best place to learn even more about budgies. Be sure to read through the links provided above, which include the forum's many articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you have all the right information to care for your little one.

If you have any questions after reading through everything, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help

We'd love to see more of him when you get a chance!

Cheers!

So recessive pied budgies, like River, have black eyes throughout maturity...

Sweet, so I will take a look in the morning for the white around his nose to make sure I got myself a little boy

The pet store told me River was a female, and I wasn't aware of the mutation effects, so I just assumed.

Good thing River can be a gal or guy name hahaha. THANK YOU for all of ur help!

You're very welcome.
We'll look forward to seeing lots more pictures of River.
You might like to start an on-going picture thread for him in the Budgie Pictures section of the forum.

Many pet stores will give out false information simply because they don't know any better. It seems to be a common misconception that female budgies have pink ceres. It's actually males that have pink ceres. Gorgeous boy btw

Pet stores really don't know gender most of the time, as iHeartPieds has said.

All male budgies, regardless of mutation, have pink or purplish ceres as babies. Even if River were not recessive pied, he would still have a pink cere as a baby since he is male. However, since he is recessive pied, his cere will never turn royal blue like male budgies of other mutations

If he were a girl, he'd have a whitish, beige, or pale blue cere

I can't wait to see lots more of him!
