Default Introducing two new budgies

Hello,

Not sure if I'm posting this right but hope I am

We have 3 budgies; Tango , Jay & Grant We used to just have Tango & Steve but unfortunately Steve passed away 3 months ago.

Tango was starting to get quieter so we decided to get new birds. The breeder seemed to know what he was talking about but he told us to just add the new budgies straight to Tango's cage.

We weren't so sure since Tango can be a little aggressive, he was to Steve, but nothing that seemed too serious, so we waited 2-3 weeks before putting them all in together after having their cages next to each other (we have read the Introducing new budgies guide here since, but with what the breeder said we thought we were ok).

Any way, there was quite a lot of fighting like chasing each other off perches and food constantly even though we put enough in for all of them. It seemed a bit more than normal bickering so we've separated them but now Jay and Grant are still fighting a little, when they weren't before.

We just want to know if Tango will ever be able to be introduced to the new budgies and if what they were doing was serious fighting or does it just look worse than it is?

Sorry for the essay! Thanks for reading!

Hi! to Talk Budgies

Not all budgies get along with one another and it is always best to introduce birds in neutral territory rather than simply putting them into a cage together.

When you do put budgies into one cage (even after several introductions in neutral territory) it is best to completely rearrange everything in the cage - perches, toys, food and water dishes, swings, etc.
Make sure you have separate food and water dishes for each budgie. Following these steps can help alleviate some of the territorial aggression that may occur.

Another consideration is how large the cage is.
The bigger the cage the better as long as the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2".

For three budgies, I'd highly recommend a Prevue Hendryx F040 cage. This gives the budgies room to move away from one another and give one another space.

All that said, there are still times when one or more budgie may been to be housed separately. Often when this happens, you can still give the budgies out-of-cage time together as long as you carefully supervise them during the time they are out with one another.

As far as predicting whether or not your birds are going to get along in the long run, that will remain to be seen. Be patient, take things a day at a time and remain flexible.
