I got a new budgie today from a local pet store in Houston. I originally went in to get more cuttlebones for Johnny and June and ended up looking at the birds of course lol. My eyes instantly landed on this girl (assuming she is a she because that is what they told me) and i instantly fell in love with her and HAD to take her. Living conditions looked poor due to the fact that they had 10 budgies in a 30×18×18 cage she seems to be going through a molt because she has pin feathers on her head. Now can anyone tell me how old she is? I'm thinking around 1 year or pretty close as her iris is clearly visible and she doesn't have bars down to her cere. And what do y'all think about her mutation? (Please let me know if there is anything in this post that is against the rules and I will edit it out as I am still try to learn the Guidelines and such) Thank you!!New budgie Sky-20180312_104750_1520870889080.jpg

She's beautiful, she's a sky blue opaline yellowface II dominant pied budgie

Keep in mind that you are going to have to keep her separate from Johnny and June permanently (even after quarantine) as you should not have uneven amounts of males and females in the same cage, and even if they were all one gender, three budgies often bicker as one of them ends up being the third wheel.

We ended up going back and getting another because I did some research on having an uneven amount of budgies together lol I'm pretty sure we have 2 males and 2 females now so next month we will be introducing everyone at play time to see how they all do together and work our way up to one big cage together. What would be a good cage for all 4 of them when they are ready to be all together?

And would you say she is about 1 year or how old do you think?

Yes, the second budgie is a male and your estimate of his age is probably fairly accurate.

With regard to a cage, you should get the largest cage you can afford and have room for ensuring the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2".

The minimum recommended size for 4 budgies is 34 long x18 wide x25 high"
Volume = 15,300" cubic inches

However, bigger is better.f
I would recommend a Prevue Hendryx F050 Flight Cage (I have several myself)

Take a look at the threads in the "Budgie Housing" section of the forum.

If you plan to house mixed gender pairs together, it is important you follow the advice to prevent breeding.

Okay and what about sky? I think she is about a year but again I'm not quite sure. And I do plan on breeding them but not until I do a lot of research and I know all that I can know about breeding budgies but until then I will be rearranging the cage at least once or twice a month and limiting daylight hours for them and separating if needed.

I'm sorry but I'm unable to estimate Sky's age from the pictures you posted.

I'm glad to hear you are planning to take the time to do all of the necessary learning and research before considering breeding.

Since you are considering breeding in the future, please spend at least a year getting to know your birds and their personalities.
Some birds should never be bred due to health or temperament reasons.

Before breeding any species, it is important to learn as much about the animals, their personalities and the best practices to follow for responsible and ethical breeding prior to making the commitment to take on the responsibility. This requires extensive research and an openness to continual learning.
It's excellent when we know our members are planning to follow these "best practices" prior to entering into the commitment.

In the first photos of Sky you posted, I couldn't see the cere properly. In this new photo, it appears to be a dark pinkish-purple, which makes Sky a boy

Your new boy's mutation is sky blue recessive pied
