After the passing of my Ozzy bird I decided that I wouldn't get any more budgies. I never had a budgie die on me younger than 10 years old and it was so sudden and horrible I felt really sick about it. We decided to keep his buddy alone and just bond with him being an only bird. Well, last night we made a quick stop at the pet store just for fun because we love going and looking at all the animals.

When we looked at the budgies, there was one who was limping around at the bottom of the cage holding one foot up. We were worried about it and I asked an employee if they knew about it. She said "oh yeah he got out and flew into the window and hurt his leg. He's doing pretty good though, he's still eating and drinking just fine!" But it made me sad because it's like they weren't going to do anything about it. I don't know if it would just heal on its own? But my husband and I were talking and said it makes us want to get him because we felt so bad for him and he was so cute and it broke our hearts. He had a friend with him and they were spending every minute together, preening back and forth. His friend followed him to the food dish and sat there waiting for him while he ate. It was so sweet. Then they snuggled up together and took a nap. It was the sweetest thing.

We spent probably an hour trying to decide what to do, and we decided that we would get him and his friend together. And take care of him and get his leg fixed. We also saw another cutie staring up at us and watching us, and we were thinking maybe we should just get all 3 since we have morphy alone in that big cage and 4 budgies sounds like the perfect number, and we wouldn't have to quarantine another budgie in the future, we would just complete our flock all at once.

It took a lot of deciding and thinking, and I think the workers at the store were maybe a little annoyed lol because we just kept looking at them and trying to decide what to do. But we ended up leaving with all 3. We have them in an upstairs bedroom (morphy is in the living room downstairs) and they're in our old cage. We have to finish the cage and put in more toys and some natural perches, and get the injured one in to see the vet.

We are crossing our fingers all is okay with him. He seems great otherwise, he just doesn't put weight on his foot. They are all SO SWEET and we feel like we made the right choice. We can't wait to put them all together in the big cage with morphy, but we want to work on taming him on his own still so aside from waiting for the one budgie to heal, we are thinking we will wait several months, maybe 5 or 6 months, to introduce them, and try to work with them individually in the meantime. So we want to make sure they're nice and cozy for now.

I feel like they may be boys, but it's hard to tell. And the greenish colored one (the one with the limp) is hard to tell because the cere looks almost more of a tan tone? He/she looks very young and still has the darkness on his/her beak. Another has darkness at the tip of the beak.

I've added some pictures of them, and a picture of them napping snuggled up at the store.

They are all beautiful, and look to be in nice condition, they look like males to me but time will tell for sure. I would get the one with the injured leg to the vet as soon as possible so it can be determined what time of injury he has, and maybe get pain meds if necessary. I know the feeling of wanting to bring home everything you see, I have to stay away from places with live animals for sale, I would have done just what you did.

Your new threesome are all very handsome. Concern with the shop that had the birds. It looks like they had access to a large "rat exercise wheel". This really is not a good idea for birds. As the wheel spins it could move quickly (trapping a part of the bird between the wheel and the wheel support), and perhaps may have caused the injury to your one newbe. I've never heard of anyone using a wheel for a bird. I'd tell them if I saw this.

Congrats on your new additions. They are adorable and look to have a great bond. Reading their story is like reading about myself as I would’ve done exactly as you did and taken the injured one and his friends. Have you named them yet?? I look forward to hearing how the little guy gets on at the vet and also seeing a lot more of your flock.
