I'm not sure, but they look delicious.. How about the European/Greek version of begniets?
That means they are cake like... light and fluffy... little squares, usually deep fried but some are baked. Am I close??

They are soft cookies, filled with hazelnuts! We make them every Christmas and then sprinkle them with caster sugar! Their name is "κουραμπιέδες" kourabiedes and they look like little snowballs!
