Default Recipe for Sick Budgie

Okay, so I THOUGHT I posted this freaking thing that I spent forever writing, but I GUESS NOT. Okay, I'm going shorten it so much!

Ju has cancer, he's not eating as much, not eating enough of the sprouts that I mix powdered dandelion root into (it helps fight the cancer, but he's not ingesting enough now), but dives right into the dry seed I give them at bedtime.

I'm thinking of making him some treat sticks. They'd have:

Ginger
Cinnamon
Dandelion root
Bee pollen
Alfalfa
Cayenne
Flax eggs
Millet
A smidge of sweet potato

The ginger, cinnamon, and cayenne are for pain and inflammation, among other things. The bee pollen is the sweetener, for helping get rid of Alice's candida, and for nutrition. It apparently has special enzymes or something in it, too. The alfalfa is a nutritional supplement. The flax eggs are a vegan binding agent. The dandelion root is for the cancer. The sweet potato is for nutrition, and the millet is because Juey likes it :3. I'll be baking it in the oven at a low temperature as opposed to using my dehydrator.

What do you guys think?

Certainly has some healthy ingredient's. If you make some, please let us know how your bird's like it, and maybe a pic of the finished product...

I think it's a great idea, Robyn.

If you choose to make the treat sticks, please share the final recipe with the amounts of each ingredient so other members will be able to try making them as well.

Can do . My cousin's lent me her awesome camera, so I'll be able to get excellent pictures. I'm so ticked off that my first post wasn't submitted properly x_x

Thanks for the flattery, you two .

I might have to have a bite! Those sound good

Okay, just kidding. But I'd love to try and make them! Sounds like some wonderful ingredients!

Okay, so I made the special treats on Thursday I think. I tried to remember how much of each ingredient I put in as I went along, but I might be a bit off in regards to the amount of bee pollen and cayenne I put in. I'm not the best at writing out instructions, but I'll give it a shot.

Yield: 10-15 balls
Cook Time: 30-45 minutes
Prep Time: ~20 minutes
Ready Time: 50-65 minutes

Ingredients:
2 spray millet
An equivalent of half a garlic clove's worth of ginger root
1/8 tsp cinnamon
6 tsps powdered dandelion root
1 teaspoon ground bee pollen
1 tsp alfalfa
1/2 tsp cayenne
1 flax egg
3 tablespoons sweet potato
Water

  1. The dandelion root, bee pollen, and alfalfa (and cinnamon if you aren't using pre-ground) should be ground ahead of time. All, except the bee pollen, are best if ground using a clean coffee grinder. The bee pollen should be ground with a mortar and pestle. Add all of the ingredients (cinnamon, dandelion root, bee pollen, alfalfa, and cayenne) in their respective amounts to a small bowl and mix together.
  2. Remove all the seeds from two millet sprays and place the seeds in a medium bowl. Once all of the seeds are separated from one another, blow all the husks out. If you don't feel like "de-seeding" the sprays, you can just put an equivalent of two sprays worth of store bought hulled millet in the bowl.
  3. Microwave an equivalent of 3 tablespoons of sweet potato. Once it's nice and soft, mash it. Add some water, and mash some more until it has the consistency of baby food.
  4. Slowly add slowly add the "medicinal" mix of the ground herbs, spices, etc., to the sweet potato, while thoroughly mixing. Add water as needed to keep the sweet potato at the consistency of baby food.
  5. Once all of the medicinal mix is added to the sweet potato, add half a garlic clove's worth of ginger root. The ginger root can either be finely chopped or "juiced" into the sweet potato using a garlic press. Mix thoroughly.
  6. Add the sweet potato mixture to the millet and combine.
  7. Add one flax egg to the millet and sweet potato mixture and combine. A flax egg is one teaspoon of ground flaxseed (grind the flax yourself in a coffee grinder) to 3 teaspoons of water, then thoroughly mix to make the flax egg. You can substitute a chia egg using the same method.
  8. Roll the "dough" into 10 to 15 balls, and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  9. Bake in a toaster oven (or regular oven) at 150F for 30-45 minutes. I chose to cook mine to a cake-like consistency.
  10. Remove from oven, and let them cool before serving.
  11. They can be stored in the fridge for a few days before freezing them.

Ziggy and Alice poked at it the other day, if that counts . I've never really had any success when it comes to giving them prepared foods. Like, they won't even eat salads I make them . The closest thing they've eaten to prepared food is their sprouts with dandelion root and other remedies mixed in.

I'll try to get some pictures of the treats, but you guys probably know by now how lazy I am .

The treats turned out quite well, though. I'm sure you're budgies would enjoy them .
