Default Soy butter?

Hi!

I've been looking into making some homemade treats but most of the recipes I have found require peanut butter aaaand I'm deathly allergic to nuts

So, I was wondering if anyone knows whether soy butter is ok to use for budgies or not? I've seen some places saying soy beans aren't good for budgies but I've also seen soy bean meal in pellets so I'm kind of at a stand still :\

Any help or other suggestions/alternatives is appreciated!

The soy butter I use contains both toasted soy and soy oil but is peanut, tree nut, gluten, dairy, and egg free. ( not that eggs are bad )

I don't know about soy butter Brit, but I do know that any soy meal that is going to be fed to birds must be specially heat treated or it can be toxic to birds. I am a bit rusty on the subject now as I was toying with the idea of using soy meal in a hand raising mix I was making about 16 years ago. I found out when I was researching suppliers and one very helpful miller told me specific requirements. I decided against using it. It has something to do with the hormones present in soy beans.

After reading the information in this link:

Steer Clear of Soy Protein for Animals

I personally wouldn't risk it!

Thank you Kate and Faery!

I'll stay away from the soy butter for them, I don't want to risk my girls health! :O

Does anyone have any ideas on what else I could use as a peanut butter replacement? One that's safe for budgies obviously

This is why I decided against using soy meal in my hand raising mix and why I decided to make my own as nearly all the commercial mixes use some soy meal if not using it as a main ingredient. Also another reason I don't feed pellets to my birds. Luckily in Australia our Soy is not genetically modified. There has been talk that they may allow it to be grown here. But I am hoping they don't bow down to pressure to do this. Soy is also too high in protein for birds and reading that article is a useless protein anyway. Birds can only handle around 20% protein which is the same for cats and dogs and soy is somewhere around 50% protein.

You could always try Canola Oil or even Blended Vegetable Oil that contains no soy. Many muffin and cake recipes use oil instead of butter now.

I hear coconut oil is fine in small amounts (because of high fat content).

Grapeseed oil is also a good choice that I'm pretty sure isn't toxic to birds. Anyone can correct me if I'm wrong!
