AGY infection, any advise

460 Views 9 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Cody
I got a budgie from a pet store I worked with, his health was so bad they left him in the back unattended too. I took him in along with 1 others in his cage.
He was severely underweight. 25g I took him to an avian vet, and they diagnosed him with avian gastric yeast infection. No cure to it they said. They gave me FS10 to add to his water which is disinfectant/safe bacterial killer and ingestable, however my budgie did pass away while Still losing weight at 21g.
The other one is alive but currently at that battle I had with my previous, i take him to the vet every second to third week, his weight was okay for that past 6 months, he does have the same disease as it's highly contagious to birds. But he is now losing weight, from 37g to 31g in 2 weeks. Any advise to help gain his weight
The disease basically doesn't let food nutrition digest and therefore they lose weight as their body isn't getting the food it eats and overall die, that's all I know from the vet, no cure known, their last resort to attempt would be amohotericin b which is extremely expensive and they aren't sure the bird would make it regardless as it's a toxic medication but could kill the bacteria.
The budgie that didn't make it was scheduled the medication the day after his death but didn't get to attempting it. Any advise at all would be advisable. I'm super stressed out.

With AGY you are not dealing with a bacterial organism you are dealing with a fungal organism and unfortunately the Ampho B is the only drug that has had success in treating an active infection, and yes it is a nasty drug. I have had a couple of birds that have had it, the Ampho B I get from my avian vet is specially compounded for them by a compounding pharmacy. It is also not uncommon for a bird with AGY to acquire a secondary bacterial infection which also needs treatment.
Thank you so muchhh, I was really scared to agree to the amohotericin b but hopefully it helps
I can share my experience and say that Nystatin did not work for my budgie. Definitely do go for Amp B if the vet has it.
One of my birds that took the Ampho B started to vomit it up after about a week of it, in that case the vet prescribed a couple of other things to be given prior, one was Carafate given 1 hour prior, and Cisapride that was given 1 hour after the Carafate and 15 minutes prior to the Ampho B, this combo helped to keep him from vomiting. All these things were administered directly into the mouth, not put in the water.

I truly appreciate your time and knowledge, certainly giving me some peace of mind, he lost another 2 grams over night, he has a fecal smear due tomorrow and hopefully they'll have the amp b in or I'd have to wait until they get in stock.
It is not good that he continues to lose weight, perhaps he needs to be hospitalized where he can be tube fed a special formula for ill birds.

I'm very sorry to hear your budgie is suffering with AGY.
I agree with Cody. If he is rapidly dropping weight, it would be best for him to be hospitalized.

So I took him in today, (it is an avian vet, one of the very few near me as there are a lot of normal vets and few avians)
I asked about the amohotericin b, he said he had one bird he used it on and it didn't work so he doesn't want to suggest it. They did another fecal smear. He said keep using f10sc in water and syringe him some so it definitely is intake which I've been doing (really sadly because he doesn't like being hand held, forget force fed) and he said keep doing that and feed him a porridge /baby bird food.

That was all for my update today, he is at 28g and I'm losing hope and there isn't anything being done to aid him at the avian.
I would try to get another opinion from another avian vet, if he has only used the Ampho B once then it does not seem that he has much experience in its use. F10 is a disinfectant and I have never heard of it being used internally.
