Hi! I also need help identifying the sex of this young budgie. (It is a young budgie based on the bars, right?) I'm sorry if the picture is not great (it was taken by the breeder). I've been told it's a male, but the white in the center of the cere has me wondering.

All the best (and thanks in advance!),
Molly

Welcome to the forums! :)

From the pics I'm seeing a faint bluish colour mingled with white and white circles around the nostril area.
If that is what you see in real life then you have a beautiful young female there.
I'd say this budgie is about 3 months old.

Hi there and :welcome: to the forums!

What a cute little one :) I agree with Aluz that from these pictures, this budgie appears to be female

However, more photos would help, of course, if you can get them! ;)

Meanwhile, be sure to read through the forums, including the Budgie Articles and forum "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subforum for easy reference) to ensure you're up to date on the very best of budgie care!

If you have any questions afterwards, don't hesitate to ask--we're here to help. :D

You couldn't have come to a better place to learn and share even more about budgies! I hope to see you around, as well as any budgies you may currently have. :photo:

Is this cutie coming home with you? :fingerx:

Cheers!

More confusion

Hey, all. Thanks so much for getting back to me so quickly and for sending all of these helpful links. I'd very much like to adopt this little guy (girl, I guess, haha), but I'm getting a lot of confusing mixed messages from the breeder. He's insisted that the parakeet is male because "males have blue beaks (by which I assume he's talking about the cere) and females white" (rough translation from Spanish: I'm in Mexico). At first he told me he/she was four months old and now one month old, (which is his explanation for the white around the cere). One month seems improbable based on the picture and also is quite young to adopt a parakeet I wasn't planning on hand feeding. (I apologize if these questions are getting out of the purview of this thread.) All of this seems kinda fishy to me. Am I right?

You are very right. Unfortunately, either this breeder isn't very knowledgeable, or he is trying to trick you on purpose just to make a sale. :(
No doubt this budgie is older than 1 month old. Even though this budgie still has most of the baby barring on the forehead area, I can see a couple of pinnies there. My guess is that this budgie is fresh from turning 3 months old.

Another misconception by the breeder is the explanation of the white colour on the cere, young and immature males don't have white on their ceres and this particular budgie is a recessive pied, if it were a male, the cere would not mature to the royal blue colour, it would keep the immature pinkish/purplish colour which I'm not seeing on the photos.
I'm still going with young female for this cute budgie.

FaeryBee... that's a great set of links. Thanks. I've read many of them but will be sure to read all. ..... It's amazing the amount of misinformation people at pet stores will tell you, or, what others might do to sell a bird. The pet store people seem to know little. (I realize in this case it sounds like a breeder with some confusing information.) .... I wish I knew what happens to the birds that don't sell in a u.s. pet store. ( Off topic a bit here. ) My local pet stored had about 10 birds that it looks like they've swapped out for younger ones. It's close so I stop in regularly for various things. I always check out their birds of course. ......Anyhow..... pretty bird in the photos......so fun to look at all the images that everyone posts. .....Good luck with your new pet if you take that one home. . .
