Bertie: The Princess of Wales Parrot (ongoing thread)

So I just put a deposit on a 6 month old baby boy. Hand raised/fed and socialized since birth from a reputable breeder. Will get him after Thanksgiving. Scoured all over the US for one given how rare they are here.

I’ll post updates as I go along through this adoption process. 😊

This is what one looks like for those unfamiliar

I think wife and I are settling on Bertie. Play on words with “birdie” and it was also the nickname of King George VI who saw England through WW II.

Thanks all! We’re very excited to have him. Right now we’re giving him space to settle in and get used to his new surroundings. 🙂

Yup.

Also—he seems to have immediately taken to my wife and my wife is smitten. Probably because of his last “mom” (breeder)

Tell me about it…. 😆

My wife set him down a top his cage to eat. Left the room. When Bertie was done, he looked up and saw she wasn’t there. He wasn’t having it and started calling out for her.

He hasn’t even been in our house for 24 hrs yet!

Day 2 (?) with Bertie.

Opened the cage for him this morning and let him be. I then went over to the counter and proceeded to chop up some food for him. A short bit later, he flew out. Landed on my shoulder. Then he hopped down and proceeded to help himself to the food I was making for him.

He’s a hoot!

So much for giving him time to acclimatize?

That's great, the breeder did a great job socializing him, better this way than terrified of everything.

Yeah. The breeder has been great to work with and she cares so much for her birds and it really shows.

The breeder has been excellent to communicate with and we’ve been texting back and forth, with her answering all my questions and giving advice. And of course, she wants to see how her former baby is adapting to its new home. So I’ve been sending her updates and pictures, too.
