Bonding with two new English budgies who don't seem to be getting along

141 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  StarlingWings
Hello,

Few days ago I bought two male budgies (young blue and a bit older green one), they were from different stores because I didn't find the all colors I wanted in a single store. The blue one seemed to be getting comfortable alone quickly and was receptive to my bonding attempts. However, when we introduced the green budgie, things has started to change .The green budgie suddenly runs frantically in the cage and I feel he's stressing the blue one because he's starts screaming and jumping when the green budgie starts doing that.

I'm feeling this is going to affect my attempts to tame the blue one because he's not paying attention anymore, I was wondering if I should separate them and bond with the blue one first ? Then I can put them back together once the green budgie is more settled in. Is that good idea ? if that's the case, should I keep the cages close together or put them in different rooms and bond separately with each one. FWIWI I feel green budgie is going to be tough to tame, he's older and seems more stressed overall

Thanks

Are you certain that both budgies are male?

The two budgies should not have been put in the same cage.
Quarantine procedure should be followed as they are from two different locations.

Quarantine means housing the new bird in a different cage in a different room than the current bird (as far away from the room the current bird is in as possible) for a period of 35-45 days.

Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks.
Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

It is also a good idea to always take a new budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a "well-birdie" check-up. This allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet and the vet can establish a baseline for your bird in case of any future illnesses or injuries.

Having the two budgies in separate rooms and working with each of them daily on a regular and consistent basis during their quarantine period is best.

Budgies need a minimum of two weeks to settle into their new home and you should not be trying to touch or tame them at this time.

Play music or the TV for them when you are not around during the day.

Taming and Bonding is all about helping your budgies learn to trust you and it takes a great deal of time and patience on your part.
You should never grab your budgies or force them to be touched.
To bond with your budgies, you need to build their trust in you.
They will have to learn over time that you will not hurt them, grab them and try to force them to allow you to hold them.

To build your birds’ trust, sit by their cage and read, talk or sing quietly to them for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After about a week, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to them so they will learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt them.

After a week of resting your hand on the outside of the cage, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.

Don’t make sudden moves, don’t try to touch them.
Let their get used to the idea that the hand is now in their safe place and not harming them.

After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward your bird. If they become agitated, stop moving your hand and just hold very still until they calm down. When they are comfortable with your hand near them, you can offer them a bit of millet or a few seeds.

Always work at your birds’ pace.
Move slowly and talk reassuringly and calmly to their whenever you interact with them.

Bonding means allowing your budgie to choose to be with you.

When you are ready to introduce your two budgies after the 45 day quarantine period, put the two cages near one another for several days.
After that, please be sure to introduce the budgies in neutral territory.
Sometimes having two or three supervised meetings prior to moving them into one cage is advisable.
Before introducing a budgie into another budgie's cage, the cage should be completely rearranged (perches, toys, food and water dishes) in order to help prevent any potential territorial issues. :)

Wow thanks so much those are really helpful information!! I wish I knew about this website before I put the birds together. I separated them to quarantine right now and will do avian vet well-check. Those are really great info, thanks so much. I'm going to go through the stickies to make sure I don't miss any info, I appreciate taking the time to explain and for sharing the links.

I believe both are males, the seller initially sold us a green female but he said it's male. But we weren't convinced by the cere color and every expert we asked told us it's female, so we returned it and got another green one with blue cere (my avatar picture shows the previous green budgie).

You’re welcome.
I’m glad you are finding the forums helpful.

If you post full sized close up pictures of your budgies ceres in this thread, we can confirm their genders.

Your Avatar is too small for me to see the birds well, do even if you had both current birds in it, I won’t be able to tell from that tiny picture 😉
