Budgie Enjoys Small Cage?

1021 Views 3 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  FaeryBee
Sweet Pea is my rescue budgie. She was in a larger cage before I moved one I hand made. It was large enough for her to fly and enjoy but it is now for my finches. I had to buy her one when I moved. She was trying to jam her head though it to escape and wasn't comfortable at all in it. I never saw her content behaviour while she was in it. So in order to transition her into a smaller one (her travel cage until I can return it and get another one) I put her in a very small 5x5x8 cage while I prepped her travel cage for her. However, she seemed to enjoy her transition cage so much. She was getting all poofy and chirping and using her cuttlebone, which she usually doesn't do until a day in the cage has passed. She also went straight to sleep for a nap and has been climbing all over it and hanging upside down. Which is pretty happy behaviour for her! She can flap around a bit in it and I'm just worried this cage won't be good for her, even if she likes it. I am working on getting her hand tame so she can come out to fly around and get her exercise. She is not clipped and I worry. I'd rather come back to her in a smaller cage and safe then come back to her with a broken neck. I also have 2 finches I could put her in with if necessary. I just don't know if i should keep her in the smaller one or put her in with the finches. Or when I go to return the cage to get another one but slightly larger? Advice would be loved. :green budgie:

Hi there and :welcome: to the forums!

I'm glad she's doing fine in the travel cage for now, but she does need a bigger cage. Just because she's relaxed in it doesn't mean its a good long term home for her. Also, I think you may be misreading her climbing up and down the small cage as excited behavior when it may mean in this case that she's confused as to where all her space went. It is quite true that budgies, when excited or happy, are quite the acrobats and love climbing all over their cage, but they also do this when they feel cooped up and unhappy. ;)

You should never put her in with the finches-- budgies are parrots and have the beaks to prove it. It's very possible that should one of the finches annoy her, she would unintentionally hurt him.

What you definitely need to do is go out and get her a new cage-- the minimum size for a single budgie is 18 in. x 18 in. by 18. in, but bigger is always better. She'll be much happier in it long term for sure, and will have plenty of room to stretch and climb as will as flap her wings.

Thank you! I felt as though the finches would be a bad idea. But I was being told to. I was worried she would hurt the boys and I don't want that. I'll for sure buy her a larger one on Saturday when I can get a vehicle to pick up another cage. Thank you so much! Any other advice? I did my research when I got her but I always second guess what I should do with her.
Hi! :welcome: to Talk Budgies

It is important to give SweetPea the biggest cage possible while ensuring the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2" in width.
The very minimum size cage for a solo budgie is
18" L x 18" W x 18" H but I personally wouldn't go any smaller than 30" L x 18" W x 18" D and BIGGER than that would be even better.

The more space a budgie has in its home, the better -- even for those who get multiple hours of out of cage time each day. :)
