Hey there! Thanks for visiting my thread. My budgies' food (seed mix from Petsmart) smells like rotting grapefruit. It's been like this for a while. Is the food harmful? I am not a very experienced owner, so I can't really tell you how my budgie is doing with the food. They don't seem super sick to me. But I'm not sure. Can anyone help me? You may reply asking for more information; I will provide as much info as possible.

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

What brand of food is it?
Some brands of seed mix are better than others.
The best commercially prepared ones would be Dr. Harveys and Volkmans which you can buy through Amazon.com

If is actually smells like "rotting" grapefruit I wouldn't recommend using it.
Some commercial seed mixes have citrus oil added which gives them a light citrus odor but the seed mix definitely should not smell 'bad'.

My concern is that you indicate your budgies "don't seem super sick" :S
Does that mean you think they are sick?

How long have you been giving them this seed?

Are they on a healthy diet including pellets, seed mix, fresh fruits and vegetables?
Do you have a cuttlebone and mineral block in their cage? :)

You will find lots of good tips for introducing new foods to your budgies in the Diet and Nutrition section of the forum.

I use an inexpensive blend of seed from Walmart for my flock, it is preserved with orange oil or essence it smells wonderful, like fresh oranges, I bought a bag of Hartz by mistake and it smelled horrid, very rancid smelling and it just turned my stomach. I refused to feed it to my birds and returned it for my regular brand! If it smells gross I would not feed it, return or toss.

FaeryBee:

The brand I give them is Wild Harvest. And again, I don't know if they are sick. Yes, it does smell really bad. Another thing I forgot to mention: I store the seed mix in a container that used to hold tomato sauce (it was thoroughly cleaned out) for convenience, since the seed mix I buy comes in a bulky bag that's hard to pour. Is this okay? I'm not sure if it is the seed mix itself that smells bad or the container I use.

Again, I don't know if they are sick. They seem fine to me, although not as vibrant in color as I they should be. It's probably because I haven't been feeding them fresh fruits and veggies, only seed mix and pellets. I know I really should feed them fresh foods, but they get so scared they won't touch it! I'm really scared of making them uncomfortable/scared. I will try though. They are not very well trained. They won't come out of their cage, but they do know a bit of basic finger training. I have a cuttlebone perch, but no mineral block.

Thanks for replying and helping out! :)

The seed mix should not smell bad.
I would recommend getting new seed and discarding the seed you currently have.

IF you choose to try another bag Wild Harvest, hold on to both your receipt and the seed bag.
If the new seed smells the same as the old seed, return it to the store and ask for a refund.

Whether you choose to try another bag of Wild Harvest or to get a different brand, I would suggest you get a container that has never been used for storing other foods for storage. [Dollar Tree has good sized plastic containers]
Wash and dry the new container thoroughly before using it.
This will also help you determine if the problem is/was the seed or if the container was partially responsible for the odor.

Take a look at the tips in the Training and Bonding section of the forum for information on introducing new foods to your budgies. They will help as you work to get your budgies to try some healthy vegetables.

You can also use ACV in their water. It is a natural pro-biotic and will help their digestive system and will help boost their immunity.
