Brought my budgie to the vet today and she has a broken tibia with nerve damage to her toes. Vet stabilized the break with tape and gave Meloxicam. Has anyone had their budgie have nerve damage that healed? I am worried she will never be able to perch again . Her toes are not grasping on that leg. So sad. Hope she heals and it has use of it again.

How did the leg get broken?
Does the vet believe the nerve damage is going to cause long term pain?
Do you have the budgie in a small hospital cage at this time?
Do you have other budgies or just one? What is her name?

A budgie can learn to perch on one leg but accommodations may need to be made to the cage. Some birds have their entire leg amputated.
Provide a couple of platform perches for your bird.

Vet said it may be irreversable damage to her toes from the fracture. My dog nipped her . NOt sure about the pain, the toes didn't respond to pinching but the foot did. Yes budgie is in a glass aquarium with screen top. She is my only one.

I'm very sad to hear your bird was injured in this manner. I hope she will have a full recovery.

How it happened is irrelevant at this point. I am very aware of the danger of having dogs with a bird. How it heals is most important right now and the reason for my post. Has anyone seen nerve damage repair itself and how long should I expect it to take if it can? Thank you

Each injury is unique, just as every individual is unique.
There is no way anyone on this forum can predict whether or not the never damage your budgie has suffered is reversible.
Asking for other's experiences in the matter is rather like tilting at windmills.

At this time, your best course of action is to carefully follow your Avian Veterinarian's instructions.
Your questions regarding the nerve damage should be directed to the veterinarian who is a professional

One of my budgies, Lily has a chronic weakened leg. She gets around very well in a large cage (100cm x 120cm x 80cm) with three other budgies using her beak, working leg and wings. She appreciates a thick natural wood perch and platform perches but chooses to sleep on a swing with natural wood perch which she shares with her pal Neville. The bird room has several cages and when out for exercise she can climb every one. Only time she gets in difficulty is if she ends up on the floor, there is a ladder positioned for her use but she usually fly hops to me for a lift. How do you provide perches for a bird in what is described as a “glass aquarium with a screen top”?

Thank you for that info my biggest fear is that she will never be able to swing again which she loved. She is in the glass aquarium temporarily while her fracture heals.
