My 8 year old budgie was really energetic until I came home on Wednesday. He was lethargic...not eating and i could tell he was really sick. I took him to the hospital and he has stayed since Wednesday. He was diagnosed with megabacteria a disease he had and was treated as a baby since then he had no reoccurrences. They treated him with an anti-fungal medicine and feeding him baby food and vitamins to get his weight up. Yesterday he was the same but his feces were better and his weight was up a little but not eating. Today, he is starting to move around and looks better. I know it takes a while for the medicine to help and the liquid food is best. The vet hospital also keeps very warm. I worry if he is alone all the time will he feel depressed since he is in a small plastic box and alone.

I am wondering how long to keep him there?

I live in Japan and the doctor told me it`s up to me.

Does the vet not have a recommendation as to when it will be best for the bird to be released? Surely asking them their professional opinion will be better. I understand ultimately they give you the right to remove him when you please, but I would personally ask them for their expert opinion on the matter to make a more informed decision.

Welcome to talk budgies. Sorry to hear your bird is ill. Did the vet tell you what kind of medication and how you would need to administer it if you choose to take him home ? I agree that taking him home would be good for his mental and emotional well being which will help in his fight with the disease and aid in his weight gain. We have some excellent info here on this disease and a good number of us who have dealt with it. We will help you...

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

I'm sorry to hear your little budgie is suffering from AGY. :( The information in the following links may be helpful for you:

I think if you can keep him warm enough and have the time to spend with him when you take him home then being in his own surroundings with your love and attention will be very beneficial to him. As Therm suggested, I'd ask the vet what the benefits would be if he stays in the hospital before making a final decision.

The medicine is Amph.... I investigated and it`s what vets say is the only reliable medication for this illness. It can be given orally and I have given my budgies medicine before. He can`t fly (hasn`t for years). So it`s easy to pick him up. I should probably continue given him liquid food as it sounds like his stomach is a little sensitive. The doctor told me last night he was eating.

I probably should keep him in a small box for a few days until his strength is back to normal. My only concern is keeping his box warm enough. I have a cage heater which I will use and use the room heater at night. It`s getting a little chilly here but not freezing.

The doctor said it was better at first to keep him in the hospital but won`t say exactly when to take him home.

I'm sure you'll feel better having him home with you.

Here are some options for helping keep him warm that may be helpful for you:

If you have a heating pad, you could place it under a portion of the cage.
However, don't place it under the whole cage because he needs to have a place to move to if he feels too warm.

You can cover the top and three sides of the cage with a fleece blanket.

You can fill a water bottle with hot water and wrap it in a sock and place it in one corner of the cage for him to snuggle against if he wants to.

Good luck with your little fellow.

Please be sure to post updates on his condition in this thread.
I'll be checking back to see how he's doing.

As long as he is definitely eating properly then I agree you should bring him home and keep up with the medication. If he is not eating , only eating soft liquid type food then he should stay at he vet. Is he being crop fed, or eating himself?
You also need to make sure his cage and toys are absolutely clean always, fresh water with Apple Cider Vinegar that has Mother in it will help also. This is a natural probiotic. I have a AGY Budgie and he is fed Probiotics regularly. Good luck and definitely keep him warm.
