Budgie incessantly chirping at night

2408 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  StarlingWings
Hello there! I’m new to this forum, and I’m in search of some help regarding one of my budgies. I have two at the moment - Sky, who is several years old, and Ash, who is about six months old. Sky has recently developed a very annoying habit of chirping incessantly at nighttime, and I mean a repetitive call that she can do for hours. They do sleep in my bedroom (it’s the only suitable place in my home for them) but even with silence, lights out and a blanket over the top she will not stop chirping. Not only is it quite frustrating to accommodate my life around her, Ash is clearly getting little sleep and I fear he may seriously be affected if this becomes long term. Does anyone have any ideas why she won’t stop chirping? She continues with or without attention, and she always acts erratic at bedtime which is even more stressful. Any tips are much appreciated.

Did something in the room change right before this started, are the birds in the same cage, can you post a picture? Is it completely dark in the room at night or is there a night light on? You are referring to Ash as a male, and Sky as a female, are you 100% sure? How do the birds act with each other during the day?

Unfortunately, my oldest budgie (Alfie) passed away at the start of the year - this was before we’d gotten Ash and it was her first time alone. We moved the cage to my bedroom as I was up here a lot and could assure that she’d have company. She was never a very talkative or loud budgie but it was definite that she was happier with the relocation. She was more lively with my company. We got Ash in March and though she was hesitant at first they grew fond of each other - they sit on the same perches; groom, clean and feed each other; and happily chatter away throughout the day. In the daytime, there is no discernible change in either’s habits. Sky’s nighttime chirping is a new development (a month or two I’d say) and she will just consistently chirp while Ash tries sleeping and makes no noises or movements. She also acts very erratically whenever Ash tries to sleep on the side of the cage (she’d hop to and fro from perches to the cage, wiggle her head a lot and Ash would open his beak at her as she’s nestle up so closely). I usually keep a lamp with a warm glow on (months ago, once a week, I’d wake up to them both flapping madly around the cage, obviously spooked by something, and the light seems to have helped that as they’ve never been woken up similarly since - and when the light is off for the night there is no change in her noise). I cannot assure that their sexes are correct but it seems to be solely an issue with Sky and not Ash.

Could you please post a picture of each of them? Frontal view clearly showing the cere - take the pictures in natural light with no flash and no direct sunlight.
I'm assuming you have a second cage?
Perhaps Sky would be happier if she is in a cage of her own at night and placed back in the room where she used to sleep prior to Ash coming into the picture.
You could keep them together during the day and then move Sky at night.
