Budgie losing feathers daily

The breeder sounds like bad news for sure and what you describe and the pictures sure do seem to point to French Molt which is caused by a virus known as polyomavirus. This is a contagious disease for which there is no cure, birds can live their life with it but will never be able to fly. I would take the bird to an avian vet for further analysis. If you do not have an avian vet this link may help you locate one https://theparrotsocietyuk.org/site/files/resources/avian-vets-2.pdf

Hi Cody thanks for the speedy reply. I have looked into finding an avian vet and there are none at all local to me. I'd be more than happy to travel so I'll look into that now, in my naivety I didn't realise I wouldn't be able to use a regular vet. I did report the breeder on various sites because when I told him I suspected his birds had French moult he 'assured' me they definitely didn't and he'd happily bring me a new budgie and wring Ferns neck because it's just a budgie, I was absolutely shocked and disgusted but as I don't have an address there's nothing further I can do. He's now blocked my number too. To him she might be 'just a budgie' but we love her, she's part of our family and she has the most amazing little personality. She's very affectionate and funny, she's made a huge impact on our lives especially because she's so dependent on us. I just don't want her to be suffering. I'm really worried about disco too, they're now in separate rooms and we keep everything for them separate, but can he catch it? I've read differing opinions on it. Thanks again

Wow that person has no business breeding birds and obviously does not care at all about their well being. I do not have personal experience with French Molt, I only know what I have learned through education about it. Here is a link to some good info about it BUDGIES – ‘FRENCH MOULT’ (CIRCO /POLYOMA VIRUS) | and yes, from all I have read it can be passed from bird to bird, however the older the bird the better the chance of it not being too severe or deadly. There are some online vets that may be able to give you more info, look at the links at the bottom in this Locating an Avian Vet//On-Line Avian Veterinarian Help
I’m glad you have Fern and will be giving her a safe and loving home. She does appear to have French Molt.

The virus that causes French Molt is transmitted by the parent through the egg. There are budgie who carry the virus but show no symptoms.
Some people have a budgie with FM housed with other budgies and the other budgies do not show the symptoms.
Researcher have indicatethat the adult budgies may get the virus from a budgie with FM but not show any symptoms.

Please do not use sprays for mites on your budgies. Sprays are not safe.

Cody has provided you with excellent information and resources.

I hope someone on the sites on which you reported that breeder knows who he is and where he is located so the proper authorities can be notified.

So sorry to hear about Fern but I'm glad she has a loving home with you. That breeder is horrible and I hope that there is some other method by which they can face justice, clearly they don't deserve to own animals of any kind.

Please keep us posted on the situation! 🥺
