Hi,

I'm hoping someone can help me solve a mystery and get my Charlie back to good health!

Charlie (18 month old budgie) started vomitting a few weeks after I moved house. He was vomitting lumps of undigested seeds. I took him to the avian vet a few times, who diagnosed a staph infection. Charlie had his medicine (Clavulox) but he didn't improve. He'd have moments if behaving completely normally, but at other times he looked awful.

He vomitted more and more, so I got to the point of desperation and took him to my parents house. Within 2 days he was back to normal! Looking well and behaving normally. I left him there for about 10 days. During this time I cleaned my house COMPLETELY (walls, ceilings, blinds, Windows, fly screens etc).

I brought him home to my place, and within 3 days, he's vomitting again! Though this time it's clear mucous, not seeds. Droppings are normal.

Could he be allergic to something in my house? If so, what on earth could it be?!?! Plants outside? Something the neighbours are doing? Something I'm doing without knowing it?

Other info: There is a small granny flat attached to my house with tenants in it (there's an adjoining door that is never opened). My parents place is about 1 hour from the coast, whereas my place is near the beach.

Please help he help my Charlie! I love him SO much!

Thanks!

Have you spoken with an Avian Vet about the possibility of Charlie having an allergy?
Has Charlie been tested for AGY?

What is his diet like?
Do you give him ACV in his water as a natural pro-biotic?

Have you tried giving him Guardian Angel Bird Supplement?

Check out the list Deborah posted the link for. Budgies have very sensitive respiratory systems, and the fact that he cleared up at your parents house is pretty telling. I do agree with having him checked for AGY. Do you know his current weight ? Does the place you live in have wood panel, and carpeting ? What do you heat with ? Prayers for your little bird....

Thank you for your replies.
Yes, he's been tested for that yeast, all clear.

He has tried ACV for a few weeks, but I found he didn't drink much the days I put it in his water dish.

I've read the list, and can't think of anything it could be. I did spray some flies once (in a different room), but have since cleaned everything and he's still sick.

I don't know his weight, but seems normal.

Most rooms have tiles or floor boards, one room has carpet. No timber panelling. And no heating, I'm in Australia and its summer. Not using air conditioning either, as I'm near the coast so it's not too warm here.

So frustrating

So its warm there, do you run AC or open windows ? If windows are open is there any possible toxin coming in ? Neibor with chlorinated swim pool close by, area where vehicles run for periods of time, etc. ?

Could it be your water supply. Sometimes levels of Giardia or Cryptosporidium that are not in harmful quantities for humans but for a small bird it is. Old water pipes could be an issue, as can the amounts of chlorine in the water.

Maybe if you could put him on bottled water for a few days and see if he improves.

Thanks again everyone.

I open the windows. There's no cars near the back of the house where he is, we park on the street. I was wondering whether there's a plant that would make him sick just from being near it? Or even a neighbour spraying their garden or Aeroguard? My othe thought was if the people in the granny flat have ultrasonic rats deterrent or something? Would that effect him?

I thought the water could be a problem, so he's been on bottled water since returning from my parents house. No luck.

Thanks again for all your ideas!

Update: he's now throwing up seeds too, not just mucous :-(

I suggest you get him back to the Avian Vet for a follow-up visit as soon as possible.
Whether environmental or not, obviously something has affected little Charlie very adversely and his health is deteriorating because of it.

I'd ask the Avian Vet for suggestions with regard to the cause of the problem and return Charlie to your parents' home to see if his condition again improves when he's away from your living quarters.

Best wishes and please be sure to update us on his condition in this thread.

Sending lots of love, positive thoughts, healing energy and prayers for your little guy.

Exposure to certain pesticides that may have been applied before you moved...some products used indoors may be residual for up to a month or more. New carpeting (put in by landlord)?, or fogging pesticides by neighbors from outdoors are possible.
