Budgies mutation

449 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  FaeryBee
Hello dears,
In July 2022 I found my little girl in my workplace wandering around, and I captured her and since then I'm taking care for her. She was around 2-3 months old and I never figured out what her mutation
is.
Yesterday I bought a male companion for her, also don't know his mutation and his age.
Can you please tell me if you know what are their mutation and if you know their real age?

Hi there and welcome to the forums,

Your budgies are adorable. I'm so glad you were able to rescue your little girl and give her a safe and loving home. Are the photos you posted recent? If you got her in July 2022 at a few months old then she should be close to a year old now. However, she doesn't have any irises in the photo you posted. If this is the case she may be recessive pied; she does have quite a lot of body color left so my initial thought was dominant pied, but does have patterning somewhat characteristic of a recessive pied budgie. Could you post photos showing her wings? That would be helpful for confirming her mutation.

The male is grey yellowface type II budgie. He's very handsome!

Did you quarantine the new male for at least 40 days before introducing them? This is important as it allows new birds to settle in with minimal stress as well as prevents the spread of any hidden illnesses to your current bird.

Quarantine IS Necessary!

If you didn't then you will have to be very watchful and ensure that none of them display symptoms within the next few weeks. Additionally, how large is your cage? Please be sure to check if your cage is the correct size for two budgies:

Cage sizes.

Finally as you have a mixed pair, as Cody said above, it's very important to discourage breeding. Budgies are healthier and happier if they are never bred, as it is a difficult and stressful process with the potential for a lot to go wrong. Take a look at these links for more information:

There are lots of other links around on the forums so we hope you'll take a look around! Meanwhile, if you have any questions after reading through things, please be sure to ask as we'd love to help :)

Hope to see you around~

I’m glad you’re on the forums now and are committed to giving your little ones the best life you can! She is cobalt opaline single factor violet single factor dominant pied. As for her not having irises, she may be just a late bloomer. I’m not seeing evidence of recessive pied that could indicate combination pied but we will have to wait and see when her irises come in!

Meanwhile, please be sure that the new cage is made out of only budgie safe materials such as stainless steel and no paints or, heavy metals, or galvanized metals. Additionally please be sure the space between the bars is less than 1.2 cm, or budgies could get stuck in the bars and be seriously injured.

If you are able to, purchasing a cage will be much easier and safer. If not, please be sure to read the links below!
