Budgies sudden change

473 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  StarlingWings
Please help me today I got the fright of my life. When my female budgie attacked my male budgie who was foraging on the cage floor. They were face to face sqwaking, pinning the other down , rolling. They have been together for a year and I assumed are a bonded pair and have never behaved like this. It took me several seconds to shake them away. Very terrifying. The male feeds her ,they preen each other , sometimes mate. They are slightly tamed and eat from my hand with a lot of patience. The male is sitting quietly all shrunk even though he talks a lot. While she perched calmly fluffed up, eyes closed , one foot withdrawn (in my fear I thought it broke in the fight) Personality wise he is very timid and scared of everything doesn't even jump from the top perches while she is more active than aggressive, will chew everything, explore and peck at him. I'm very worried can she kill him? Is she sick?

Yes, she can kill him, you need to get another cage and separate them immediately before that happens. It is terrifying to see that, I have experienced that, seeing 2 fight in mid air tumbling to the ground. He is most likely intimidated by her and that is why you see him as timid and scared of everything, it is not good for him to be under the stress from her bullying. There is never any guarantee that when you place 2 birds together that they will get along and you have to take steps such as housing them separately if they don't, the cages can be next to one another but each needs their own space. It could be that she has a dominant personality or it could also be a hormonal issue either way they need to be separated before a very serious injury or death occurs.

Thank you for understanding how terrifying it was. My heart kept racing after that. Can you separate a mated pair? They would preen each other all day, sit together, sleep together. I'm so confused. What is a hormonal issue , how to identify it. I can't afford another cage suddenly. Is there any other solution?
Yes you can separate a mated pair especially in your situation, by not doing so you continue to put your male at risk of severe injury or death if she keeps attacking him. When a female is hormonal, the cere turns brown and it is common for them to become very territorial and aggressive. Can you post a picture of them and the cage so we may be able to advise you on some changes you can make. You can also try to break the hormonal cycle by decreasing daylight hours to 8-10 hours a day, what is their diet? Do they get time out of the cage, if so how often?

You definitely need to separate these budgies on a permanent basis.
Once a budgie attacks another budgie that aggressively, you can not risk it happening again.
If you do not keep them separated, the female is going to kill the male.

You would be better off putting the two cages in different rooms for awhile as well.
