Budgiet Diet + Behaviour Question

Hi Everyone!

I recently learned about the danger of fatty liver disease in budgies, so I'm looking to improve the diet of my birds.

Currently, they eat "premium" seed bought from the local pet shop, millet spray, and Kracker budgie sticks, as well as vegetables every couple of days.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the biggest change I need to make is switching the "premium" seed (which is high in fat as birds tend to pick out 1-2 of their high-fat favourites) for pellets, right?

I have also heard that I should buy a liver protector for my budgies to further protect them from fatty liver disease.

Which pellets and liver protector do you recommend? (preferably available online - my local pet shop doesn't have a huge selection).

Side question:

I was just wondering if it should be cause for concern that my female budgie seems to have taken a disliking to being touched. She has never really been fond of human contact, but when I try to gently stroke her chest with the back of my finger, she often pecks at my finger. She never used to do this. Is there something I might be doing wrong? My male budgie has never acted like this.

Thanks for the help!

Budgies do need to have a good, balanced diet for optimal health. This is usually done by providing your bird with fresh pellets daily and 1-2 tsp of a high-quality seed mix. In addition, your bird should regularly have fresh veggies. Fruit is ok in small amounts once a week but contains a lot of sugar and so should be limited. Occasional treats of millet are ok. There are great resources about diet and nutrition in the stickies on this forum. You can find them here: https://www.talkbudgies.com/314-diet-nutrition/.

Preferred pellet brands that people here use: Roudy Bush, Zupreem, Lefaber, and Harrisons. Often people choose one over another based on what their bird likes. Many people like the fruity Zupreem pellets for their birds, but my bird does not like the fruity pellets and picks around them.

I hope that helps! I am no expert but have learned a lot from reading on this forum.

Best of luck!
Please review the information given in the following links with regard to a healthy diet:

A Healthy Diet for Your Budgies

Cuttlebones, Mineral Blocks and Manu Clay Roses

Quality Seed Mix

A "liver protector" is not necessary but you can always use dandelion leaves and milk thistle as supplements to your budgie's food.
Consider using a good pro-biotic such as AviBios or you can utilize Apple Cider Vinegar as a healthy pro-biotic as explained in the link below.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Many budgies do not like to be touched. Since your female is letting you know she does not enjoy it when you try to stroke her, please respect her space and her desires.

Each budgie is unique and just because your male doesn't mind being touched doesn't mean your female will enjoy it. ;)

Truly, the very BEST advice anyone can offer you is to take the time to read ALL of the stickies throughout the various Talk Budgie forums as well as the Budgie Articles we have posted.
