Chiribiri and Cricket pic/vid thread: tail of two orphans

Hi! This is an on-going picture and video thread, it's is long overdue for the two :)
Here's Chiribiri, my family found him October 2021 in their garage a day before a big storm hit. He was just a baby, likely 6 months or younger. He's a small-frame budgie hovering around 27g, identified by his modest coloring and special little feather tuft, with a very gentle and polite demeanor.

Late February 2023, a friend of mine found Svrčko (aka Cricket) in a bank parking lot in the middle of one of the wettest and windiest winters we've had. We searched for his owner but did not find one. Though unknown age, indications are he's probably fairly young, 1-2 years old. He's vocal, fearless, and quite the little rascal.

Following a 32-day quarantine, the two were gradually introduced over a few days.

It's been a lot of fun watching Cricket help Chiribiri overcome his fear, with Chiribiri actually venturing out on occasion, on his own, without motivation for food. Here's from Day 2:

He's even gone flying a little, and explored the tree we "made" for him (Cricket has yet to land in the tree...):

There's always an unknown when introducing new birds to each other: we are, after all, creating a forced roommate situation and it doesn't always work out. I'm considering myself very lucky they seem to get along fine. It looks like theirs is a bromance with a story better than Twilight :)

They are certainly wearing each other out, and really enjoy an afternoon siesta.

They're not too tame yet, and it'll likely be difficult to get either of them to fully trust me. But that's okay, I am not in need of a companion pet, and I will continue to do my best to give them a good life.

I would like to thank this forum and its members for not only all the important information made available, but also the generous support of all to help me give these little dino nuggets what I hope is a fun, good life parrots in captivity can have :)

This is such a great story and a wonderful outcome for all, you no doubt saved the life of these 2 and they could not be in better hands, it so nice that they are becoming buddies, great job.

Thank you! And.. oops, I meant to state this was our picture/video thread! Edited!

Here's a short clip from yesterday of the two eating some thawed chop with fresh sprouts. This is the first time Chiribiri hopped to me for something other than millet spray (not captured, sorry). And because Chiribiri was eating, Cricket had to try some, of course, while playing on the hammock.

They discovered the tree a few days ago, and slowly have grown comfortable resting there. Finally! Now I need to get serious about a setting up a nice poop capture system to protect the travertine tile below.

They look quite at home up there just preening away the time. :D

It's been fun watching them - Cricket explores the tree, testing the different toys, Chiribiri tries to follow but certain areas aren't made for more than 1 bird, so he tries to find a way to get there, it's all the entertainment in the world 😁

According to family who watched Chiribiri (and ultimately Cricket) while I traveled earlier this year, he sometimes warbles while taking an afternoon nap. Did not know budgies do this.. so sweet, until the other bird rudely awakens him, YOINK :eek:

PS don't worry, I'm watching them closely, this was the first and only time I've seen Cricket pluck a feather like that

Sweety has just recently started doing this as well, it's adorable! I had a friend over the other day for our weekly kareoke night, and Sweety sings with us and loves this activity. Then suddenly in the middle of a song, he tucked his head under his wing and fell asleep and then kept whistling and singing along with us. My friend was like what the heck is he doing?!?! Oh nothing just singing in his sleep with his head tucked under his wing :ROFLMAO:

Cricket wanted him to wake up :D I love to listen to them sleep mumble, not all my birds have done this but a few have.

Cricket does it now, too. The sleep warbling has expanded to occasional warbling/singing as they eat or preen. It's adorable and, I suppose, efficient. Efficiency is key in their such busy lives.

Been trying to get this on video but they immediately shift to big stretches when I approach with the phone. I'll keep trying!

Cricket does not like to share.
Exhibit A

Exhibit B

Do I really need to get a second bath?!?!:(

He wants it all to himself and I think he would take over a second bath as well. You could close Cricket in the cage while Chiribiri takes a bath :D. How are the boys getting along otherwise?
Yeah, you're right, given how he guards the food dishes sometimes, Cricket would probably behave the same way with a second bath. Uh boy. I can try locking one up, but I'm concerned that might lead to an actual fight (my childhood dogs would get into huge fights if we separated them while doing leash training).

They seem to get along most of the time, and kind of figured out a routine for eating though I've intervened a few times just to make sure Chiribiri was getting enough food. They sing to each other, play, feed each other, etc. I haven't seen them preen each other more than a couple times.

Despite these little spats, check out how comfortable Chiribiri has become outside the cage! He even has no issues commuting between the cage and tree these days, and will sometimes head there on his own to sing and give me more work to clean up 😁

I noticed that Chiribiri seems much more brave, having a bird buddy has been really good for him.(y)

Afternoon warbling time :)

(I wish my phone's camera app would stop all the extra sharpening and color enhacements, can't find a way to turn it off ugh)
