Ok, how do you tell the difference between a dominant pied with the white flight wings (bottom part of the wings) and a clearflight budgie?

I was just curious about Starbursts mutation. I know she is a skyblue greywing (has 50%body dilution throughout and grey on wings obviously lol), opaline, yellow face type two. I think that's it.

Now, is there anyways to tell if it is dominant pied or clearflight?

Her tail is all white (well....cream/yellowish from the yellowface lol) and so are the bottom of her wings, almost half her wings.

I don't see a "dot" or "thumb print" on the back of her head, but she's opaline and grey so it's really hard to tell.

Clearflight pied - Body colour is uniform with no clear band on its belly. Flight feathers are clear. Clear patch on the back of head.

Dominant pied - Body colour is not uniform with a clear band on its belly. Flight feathers are clear. Clear patch on the back of the head.

As can be seen above, the difference is the clear band on its body between a clearflight pied and a dominant pied.

Ok, so if there is any white/yellowish on her belly anywhere she is a dominant pied?

I haven't seen any, but it's hard to tell with the diluted color and yellow where there should be white, I'll have to get a pic or something.. hmm...

Thanks, that helps! ^_^

The clear band of the Dominant pied can vary from really small to Really big

a Clear flight pied will have a pure colored front some have clear patches around the neck

both Clear flight & Dominant pied have the "thumb print" of clear feathers on the back of the head and their flight feathers are clear sometimes the Major Coverts (row above the flight feathers) will be clear (like in the 1st pic has a couple clear ones)

Dominant pied wing markings generally cover the entire top of the wings and almost to the major Coverts you can see how that even varies in the 1st pic under Dominant pied

but the main way to tell the difference is how the markings are on the Major Coverts, and the flight feathers being clear (yellow in green based - white in Blue based)

There is a lot of variation between birds of both mutations. Always remember that the description given for any mutation is what has been decided is the ideal for that mutation, it does not mean that all birds will match the description exactly.

Some clearflight pieds may have only a couple of clear flight feathers, others may have totally clear wings. It is also quite common for some clearflight pieds to show some frosting on the chest area

Dominant pieds usually have a clear band across the lower front but sometimes you'll get one without the band.

Ok thanks. I've looked and I see no band, but I do see what could possibly be a little tiny splotch of yellow......it's really hard to tell with her diluted colors, I'll have to try and get a better picture.
