If the normal green male is not split for blue and the pair don't have genes for other mutations all the chicks will be normal green.

Pet type budgies that are not split for something are rare so you can expect some surprises

Hey 90,

What do you mean split? Like a mute, mixed?

Here is another pic of Leo, he has a blue tail

Leo is supposed to have a blue tail he's a Green series bird ;)

split means they carry the gene in a "hidden form" You don't see it, unless its paired to the right bird

in this case if he'd be split to blue and you put him with a blue series bird you'd get both blues and greens the greens would be split to blue

If you'd put him with a green series bird you'd never know unless both were split to blue then you'd get blues and greens again and the greens would be split to blue

Gotcha..So for example: Penny who is the same as Leo had a clutch with a yellow black eye, their chicks came out 2 yellow with some green and the other 3 looks just like Penny. So if the chick that looks like Penny mated with a yellow black eye, that chick (female) would or should have mostly yellow since the **** is this..correct? or her too would be split to have chicks of green & yellow? Does the **** have the dominate gene? or it really does not matter? Hope this makes sense

i'm confused lol

Green is dominant over everything else - It is their natural color

when you put 2 green birds together that are not split to blue you get more green birds - the shade of green varies depending on the dark factor of the parent

it doesn't matter if the male or female is Green - it's just dominant period no matter who has the Green gene

Also if by chance one of the green birds are split to blue it doesn't make a difference which one it is , you'll get Green Series and blue Series birds no matter if its the male split for blue or a female split for blue

now keep in mind if the male is split to any sex linked gene like cinnamon, Opaline, Ino and the female is NOT visually these mutations( females can not be split to these) you'll have a chance of those mutations popping up and if the female is NOT visually these mutations the babies are automatically female

Also if both parents are split to recessive pied you'd get those surprises in your nest as well.

there are other sex linked genes a male can be split to that would pop up but those are the Normal ones that seem to pop up the most when no one expects it.

"Yellow with some green" sounds like green series recessive pied. That means that both parents must have genes for recessive pied. Some of the green chicks from this clutch may have inherited the recessive pied gene in a split form but unless one parent was a visual recessive pied about half of the green chicks won't have inherited the gene

Ans xYz =Mc2...I'm lost..LOL

Note to Sue: Round cage, yes I know but it was the only big cage they had and I needed one real bad...I may be picking up 2 keets tomorrow so I will be checking out some new cages hopefully if they have more of a selection now..But again, the round cage is quite big it can hold 8 keets and only have 4 in there. I forget the size butIts about 4 feet round almost 5 feet high and about 3 1/2 feet wide. Not to hijack my own thread, but I have read about this and never saw a good reason why they are bad. Please give me your thoughts Susan or PM me.

Thanks!

Anthony

Budgies are prey animals so they like to be able to retreat to a corner when they feel they're in danger. Round cages do not have corners.

Well, I only ate one and told the others they will be okay:budge: Kidding of course ;) That's almost sad about them feeling like prey, but I understand. I plan on going out today to pick up some food, toys, hopefully another cage if I can find 2 female Keets for Felix & Noah. If no cage, I was thinking of buying a small cage cut the bottom off and use metal wire wraps to attache it to the top of the round cage if you can vision it...hey, I went to boces for Shop & Electronics for a reason back in my day ;) Serious, it will work out great, but even better if I had a spot welder on hand, but I may be able to use a blow torch with a metal coat hanger to weld it too. Anyway, I will be hitting a few stores so hopefully I will find what I need.

Thanks for the info Susan!

If you were to weld two cages together, I'd be concerned that your budgies would chew on and ingest the metal, giving them heavy metal poisoning. Better to buy a large cage; a single flight cage with dimensions 30" W x 18" D x 36" H would be great for 3-4 budgies. Many here recommend the HQ flight cage: http://www.birdscomfort.com/flight_bird_cage.html. Don't forget to quarantine the new birds from each other (unless they were housed together at place of purchase) and from the existing birds (different rooms, different cages).
