Dark Eyes - Illness?

Hi everyone,

Over the past few days, I have noticed that the area around my female budgie's eyes and cere has darkened. I have another budgie which is male and his appearance hasn't changed.

I have attached a few pictures of my female budgie (Yoyo). I've noticed something similar in the past and it has always naturally gone away, but I thought it would be worth making a post just to double-check, as it seems darker than in the past.

Thank you

Needs a vet. Aside from the fact that it's definitely bothering her and the vet can give her painkiller drops, problems with the eyes often indicate other, more serious infections, from trichomonas to respiratory problems. Fingers crossed she gets better soon. Don't forget to quarantine her.

Thank you for your reply. I found a similar thread which seems to suggest I should keep an eye on her but it is likely not serious "Some staining above the cere can happen with female budgies, so unless she is showing other symptoms, she should be just fine". Since it is affecting the eyes too maybe this other thread isn't very relevant here.

Would complete quarantining be necessary (e.g. not even allowing them in the same room) or would just separate cages but allowing them to still see each other while out the cage be fine?
You need to take the bird to a vet and do it soon, it looks like she may have a sinus infection that has effected the eyes and she is most likely uncomfortable, the eyes and the area around the eyes does not look good.

I agree with the above, this is much more serious than simply staining above the cere since she is missing significant plumage around her eyes and the area looks inflamed. Please take her to a vet for a proper diagnosis.

We took her to the vet yesterday afternoon and apparently she probably has some kind of mite. The vet said it was too late to quarantine our other budgie, but we have been given an ointment for her back and oral medicine.

Thank you for the advice.
Thank you for taking her to the vet. All the best and I hope she makes a full recovery.

As a side note, try and get her natural perches as opposed to those dowel ones.

I'll try, in their main cage they have a much thicker perch that looks like real wood, but they don't seem to use it too much. I think maybe they have just gotten used to the smoother ones, but I have heard they're not as good.

I have noticed that our male budgie (Pogo) sometimes sleeps clinging to the inside of the cage. Could this be a sign he doesn't like the perches?
No, some budgies just like to sleep like that , does not seem comfortable but some birds do that.
