Good afternoon everyone! I hope I am posting this to the right subforum.

I was hoping any of you could give me some advice on an appropriate water bottle and how to clean it.

Right now, my female budgie (still no name yet!) is drinking from this water bottle I purchased at PetSmart last year:

As you can see, it is plastic and pretty small.

My fiance lives in the country and has well water, which I've been told is not safe for pet birds to drink (we give her our bottled water instead). Because of this, I've been worried when it comes to washing the bottle in the sink. I've been using hot hot water and I scrub the inside with my finger. But that can't be enough to kill the bacteria, right?

One time I used some white vinegar and then rinsed with hot water, but I'm not sure how much vinegar you should use and how often. I also used a tiny dot of Dawn dish soap once and spent a long time rinsing in hot water.

I don't think this kind of plastic is dishwasher safe, but even then, CAN you put bird bottles in the dishwasher? I'm worried when it comes to the dish detergent and how much might be left inside, but at least I'd know it was hot enough to kill any bacteria. Should I buy a glass bird bottle? Would that be safe in the dishwasher?

I'm sorry this got a little long and my thoughts might be a bit all over the place, but I really hope you can help me! If you have different bottle suggestions, I'd prefer a very small one since she gets our bottled water and 99% of it ends up being poured out each morning.

I would just clean it with the straight white vinegar, and use a soft bristle tooth brush. Rinse it with a little bit of the bottled water they drink, dry it out and refill....that's what I would do...;)

Randy has given great advice ;) I have this same water bottle--it's in my hen's cage every day. I change it every couple of days because she mostly drinks from her water bowl. I run hot water all over it and through it, then wash it with vinegar, then hot water, then cold water. Scrubbing it with a new toothbrush is a good idea, too:D
