This has made my day! I decided to check the perimeter of the woods behind my house for branches and found a Doozy!

This is either Hickory, Hazelnut, Elm or Pine. It has some lichen and other things growing on it, so I have it on my deck to bake in the sun. But I'm wondering:

Once I remove the bark, should I scrub it with steel wool? Is that what is meant by scrubbing?

Won't I have to wait for strong summer sun for any sterilization to happen? How about getting buried in snow for a few days or freezing temps - that is supposed to kill most things.

I plan to put this in a large urn filled with rocks that I found of a huge bag of in my storage room (???) and then place some decorative rock on top, and place it in my living room, either there, or on the other end of the room.

But wait! There's more!

This I plan to mount to the top of the cage in this position. :happy4:

What do you think?

Kirsten,

There is a sticky somewhere (http://www.talkbudgies.com/do-yourself/305049-safe-natural-wood-budgies.html) that talks about how to prepare branches safely. After removing the bark, you need to bake the wood in the oven to kill any organisms in/on it or you can dry it is in the sun as you are doing. You also need to be sure you know what kind of wood it is and know if it has been exposed to pesticides. I am assuming it was not from a tree growing near a busy road? If you take a close-up of the bark, it will be easier for someone to tell you what kind of wood it is.

Good luck with your project! I am sure your birds will be happy to have a fun play place.

Thanks, Goldenwing. Hickory, Elm, and Pine are the only trees growing in that patch, so I'm certain it is one of those. And yes, I am far from the road in an area that is on the wild side.

Thanks for the link. :)
