Got another call today. Just got back. First pictures, then questions.

Jumped right out and on to the shoulder

Then I got him/her on my hand

Ok now the questions.

She was found on a rooftop at the hotel a couple weeks ago. It was 110° and she was thirsty. So a guy picked him up and gave her some water. She rode around all day on his shoulder and he took him home. (Just switching the him/her around as I dont know).

He said you can just reach in and grab her and you can pet him too. When I got home and took her out of his cage she squaked a bit but I got her pretty quick and there was no biting at all. Once out she went to my shoulder first thing. Then I got him on my hand and then she tried to fly away. He can fly but not well. maybe 6 ft no more . I went to check to see if the wings were clipped and she panicked and screeched so I stopped. Then I slowly opened a wing and all the feathers are fine.

There are lovebirds mating and nesting all over the property and I am going to assume by the black beak and small size this is a baby. Would this be correct?

She was given the seed treat bars, like perches, and seed to eat but I did not see any other seed other than the honeysticks in the cage.

I am giving him Australian mix and TOPS crumpletts tonite and will give kale and try some veges and fruit tomorrow also.

All in all she looks pretty healthy and as I am on vacation this week I can spend some time with him and take her to the vet to be checked out.

So anyway thats where we are now. Any advise would be wonderful as this is my first Lovebird.

Now to come up with a his/hers name :D.

So, the guy changed his mind?
Well, good for you :D
What a little beauty! The colors are beautiful. I don't know anything about lovebirds, but I am sure you'll enjoy the little fellow. As for the name, Henry/Henrietta sounds good to me.

Beautiful baby peach-cheeked lovebird, Rick!!

Congratulations on your new addition.

Unless you really care and plan to have the lovebird DNA tested, just decide if you prefer to consider him/her a girl or boy and give the little one a name. :)

To this day I still don't know Pedro and Poppy's genders for sure. I'm 98% sure Pedro is male but I have no clue whether Poppy is male or female.
I decided because she was a bit smaller and Pedro likes to feed her and take care of her that I'd designate her to be a "girl". ;)

Some people say you can tell a lovebirds' gender by the width of the pelvic bones, but I've been told the only way to know for sure is with a DNA test or if the bird lays an egg.

Since he's a baby -- you should be able to bond with him very easily. The more time you spend with him the more he'll want to be with you. Once a lovebird bonds to you it wants to be with you as much as possible. Peachy was hand-raised, bonded to people and is a "velcro" bird. :giggle: They are very playful and like all sorts of toys.

You are going to LOVE having this little one and I'm so happy for you. :jumping:

Make sure that Linda interacts with him and that he bonds with her too. Lovebirds can become "one-person" birds and are sometimes aggressive or territorial if they aren't socialized with other family members. ;)

I'd probably name the little sweetheart "Clover".

As in... "I'm looking over a four-leaf clover..."

Because the little one is extremely Lucky to have been adopted by you. :)

And ...half the time I'd be calling him/her my little "Lucky Clover" :giggle:

Aww, congrats Rick!! :D There is no doubt that your lovebird is still a little chick I'd say he/she is about 2 months old, I can see not only from the black beak, but also from the baby eyes and the darkish feet that the little one is very young! The feet as well as the beak will progressively get lighter in colour (the darkish feet will get a light greyish colour much like the budgie's feet).

Khaleesi, the whole lovebird flock and I officially welcome you to lovebird ownership, I'm sure this little one will enrich your life so much and give you a lot of joy and companionship as well. Just wait till he/she starts getting soaking wet from bathing, they absolutely love baths!!;)

Congrats on your lovie!! I have an 18 week old lovie that I brought home at 5 weeks and she can't wait to get out every time I walk in the room!! Looking forward to reading about the adventures you have together!!

Your PF is pretty young with all that black on the beak! The best way for gender is to DNA. There are traits that female typically do more than males and vice verses but it's not a sure thing. The pelvic bone way doesn't work till they are about a yr old but that's not a positive either but can work if done by a lovie expert...but still no guarantee:p

Lovies are full of fiestiness and spunk! They get hormonal when molting and just because so watch out for that bite cause boy they sure have a good one! Mine hasn't drawn blood but her nip hurts! She will put me in my place if she doesn't like something! LOL! But she love to snuggle with me and will even lay in my hand on her back to get scratches the way she likes it!! PICKLES is goofy when playing with her toys ~ hanging upside down swinging and attacking all her toys!!!! Loves to takes baths in a pool of water with fresh whole basil leaves in it...throwing them over her head and nibbling on them as she fluttered around in the water!!

I could go on and on about Pickles!! Here she is!

Thanks all for the kind words and advise. They said how friendly it was, thinking it must of been lost from another owner. When I saw it I knew right away it was just a baby. You have seen pictures I have taken of the Lovebirds around the hotel and from where it was found there are about 5 nesting groups I have seen.

She is definitely calm when you hold her. He will run at first when I approach the cage but I just reached in and she got on my hand right away. We snuggled a couple times while I was sitting on the couch and she closed her eyes to sleep while laying on my chest.

I am home all this week so it is perfect timing for some bonding. I am working in the yard in the mornings and by 9-10am it is too hot already so I will be in most of the day.

I will check with the vet today if they are open. If I remember right they are open on the weekends and closed Monday or Tuesdays.

Let you know when I get her checked out. I will do a DNA test also so I know :D.

Got a 10am appt. this morning for a checkup and DNA test if its not too much. I have used this vet before and she was the only certified avian vet in az. at the time I used her before.

So it's off to the shower and then off to the vet. Only $51 for exam but I am sure it will add up if we do blood testing also.

See you when I get back :).
