Health of new budgie

184 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Budgerigar1121
Hello all,

My new budgie is small and beautiful. However, I am a first time owner and I have some slight concerns. Breathing appears to be quick accompanied by what I think is some slight shaking. There is also yellow staining around the vent areas. I have attached a video to display the above concerns, but please note that through the video link , feathers appear a little bit more fluffed than usual.

Thank you for any help

His breathing does appear to be a bit labored, how long have you had him? Do you have access to an avian vet or a vet that sees birds?
Only two days, I was hoping to bring him to an avian vet next week, but was wondering if it appeared more urgent than that? I think the heaviness varies but it always appears quite rapid, and I'll be keeping an eye on it. I was thinking it might be nerves from his new environment and however he was treated before, with his previous maybe diet contributing to the yellowness?
Yes, that is why I asked how long you have had him, thinking that he has not settled in and is nervous. The yellow staining around the vent may indicate that his droppings have been on the loose side, which can also be due to being in a new environment, how do the droppings look? It is always best to get a new bird a check up anyway so if you can get him to the vet next week that would be great. The vet can run a simple gram stain test on the droppings and determine if there is any bacteria, fungal or parasitic issues that need meds. It is best to have the back of the cage against a wall, as that helps for them to feel more secure, you can also keep a light cover on 3 sides leaving the front open which will also help. Thank you so much for your reply and advice. I think he might just be a little scared as he is sleeping, eating and drinking well and staining has reduced after bathing, with healthy looking droppings since coming home onto his new diet. If there is anything wrong, he'll be with the vet next week but hopefully he's nice and healthy and settling in. Thanks again
:)
Cody has given you excellent advice! It's awesome that you've planned to take him to the vet! It's also great that you're being so attentive to his behavior! By doing so you will recognize changes that might indicate illness, more quickly. Be sure to keep a radio or TV on. In the wild, silence means danger is lurking. If you watch nature documentaries where a panther enters the area, the animals become still and silent to avoid being spotted by a predator. Budgies make wonderful animal companions! Don't loose heart if you new baby doesn't take to you right away. Since they are a prey animal, it takes them time to decide you don't want to have them for lunch. Try to look at this process as forging a friendship. Be sure to read all the stickies and articles. They are full of great information! Welcome! You will love this group!

Thank you for your kind message, and I'll be sure to have a full read through.

Perky has settled in very well, his breathing eased, with the vet saying he's very healthy. Eating, drinking and singing! He's a bit camera shy though 😛
