hello, talkbudgies! I've been around the site a little bit and finally caved and made an account today. I'm a huge budgie lover and I've kept budgies since I was little, but I'm no expert...

Right now I just have one budge, Periwinkle. He's an old boy (I'm fairly sure) age 7 who I've had since he was just a ball of fluff, loves to eat just about everything and run around. He's a yellowface budgie with a pretty teal colored belly that I named him for, and he brightens up our living room with his tweets. His sister Bluebell died last year, though, and he's been less social ever since. I've been giving him extra snacks and toys and attention for a few weeks to try and cheer him up, but he doesn't like to come out on my finger like he used to, and I'm worried about bringing him out of the cage while he's rather temperamental and has untrimmed wings.

I've been considering getting another birb or two, but I'd love to see him back to his chatty and loving self again around me. Any advice for re-befriending this old fellow or other birdie advice? :)

Hi and :welcome: Glad you finally joined us!

In case you haven't already, please familiarize yourself with our budgie resources and educational material, by taking a look at our Stickies posts at the top part of the major forum sections. General Budgie Talk, and the Health sections are a good place to start. Also take a peek at our Articles, which have a ton of vital information on keeping your budgie thriving. Also this link: http://talkbudgies.com/general-budgie-talk/333106-posting-forums.html

Many people automatically assume that two budgies are better than one lone budgie. There is never a guarantee that two individuals will end up getting along and befriending each other as planned. Many members here have single budgies that are excellent pets, and are happy being the only ones. In some cases, a perfectly happy single budgie will become upset at the addition of another. It all depends how your existing budgie is doing alone. Since you did mention Periwinkle's change in behavior since the loss of his friend, and he never seemed to regain the same zest for life as before, in your case it might be a good idea if you're ready to take on a second bird. Keep in mind there's no guarantee they'll like each other, so you may have to be prepared to house each separately in thief own cages.

If you do... make sure to follow recommended quarantine measures :)

Good luck, keep us posted if you get another budgie... and when you get time, we'd love to see a photo of Periwinkle! :)

Edit: Sorry, I just realized you also asked about re-establishing a bond with Periwinkle. Take a look at the Stickies threads in this forum section. There is some great information and tips on current methods used today for bonding and taming. http://talkbudgies.com/290-taming-bonding/

Welcome to the forums! :) It's great you have chosen to be part of this awesome animal friendly, bird loving community.

I'm sorry about the recent passing of Bluebell... Given Periwinkle's older age and if you decide to get him a companion, it may be a good idea to look for an older adult (preferably a male) who no longer has that hyperactivity more common in young budgies on the first couple of years of their lives.

Best of luck with everything, I hope Periwinkle gets his full pep back soon!
