Hello everyone! I am so glad to be here as a member of this forum. I have been lurking as a guest for some time, learning quite a bit about budgies. I figured since I am on here so much, why not become a member?

I am really a newbie. I kind of fell into the world of budgies. I knew nothing of budgies when I first got a pair. They were free to a good home and I was feeling impulsive. I brought them back after 2 weeks or so, to be rehomed because I did not know enough. I feel like a total jerk for doing that to those sweet little babies but I also felt it wasn't fair to them to get substandard care.

I was hooked, though. Some time later, when I felt more confident and like I'd be a better bird parent, I got my baby budgie, Opal. Within 2 weeks, she was hand trained, eager to learn more. Then tragedy struck, I had her for less 3 weeks and I stepped on her. I was not expecting that budgies can run that fast. I broke her leg and I don't think I've ever been more shook up in my life. She got the care she needed, with lots of thanks to this forum (and of course my fabulous vet) and now, although she is still in her hospital (which she despises), she seems almost fully healed with almost complete use back of her leg.

I feel like I am a horrible person for not paying enough attention and hurting my baby but I am trying to make it up to her.

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

I'm glad you've decided to become a member and participate actively in the forums now. :)

I'm very sorry to hear about the accident with little Opal.
I'm glad you found a fabulous Avian Vet to help treat her during the time she has been recovering from her injury and I know you've learned a great deal about caring for her. She'a a beautiful little girl.

Please be sure to carefully supervise Opal when she is playing on or near the ropes with the fringe. Budgies can easily get their feet/legs or necks caught in fringe that is longer than 1/2" long and be severely injured or even killed. Additionally, ingesting fibers from cotton rope can cause impaction of the crop.

If you have not yet done so, please take the time to familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

Hello Judith and a big welcome to the forums :welcome:

It's great to hear Opal is okay--I'm sorry about the accident! Now, being hooked on budgies is a huge commitment: You have to have enough self control to not buy one every time you enter a pet store :giggle:

Deborah has given you great advice and resources and there's an answer to every question about budgies. If there isn't--please ask! We'd be more than happy to help :)

Hope to see more of your beautiful little girl :D

Hello Judith, Welcome to TB forums. I'm sorry to hear about the unfortunate accident with Opal. But with your immense love and care and your vet's excellent treatment has restored the use of her legs back which is a miracle in itself. I'm sure she'll be back in the normal cage in no time and will be back to being playful and amaze you with her tricks. :)
