A crackling fire cheerfully flickers in your well-ventilated living room and your budgie-safe candles lightly shine through the room. The air smells of pine and apple cider, and one or two pretty packages are under the tree...(both for your budgies, of course
). Sleighbells are ringing and carolers are singing...as you decorate the tree with budgie toys (ok, maybe not
) you stop and breathe in the aroma of the holidays...
BUT WAIT! Where is all the food? Oh, that's right--you were so busy online shopping for the birds you forgot to make anything for the guests that are arriving in less than an hour!
But never fear--here are three fabulous and easy dips which can be served with veggies (if your birds didn't eat all of them), crackers, or chips. And I must say--they're quite good.
Okay, they're very good.
Fine, they're addicting....
eep:
Anyways, I came up with two of the three and they've turned into our favourite dips. Really, they can be for anyday, but we like them all on New Years Eve or Christmas Eve, when we stay up eating! By the way, most of these don't have actual measurements--it's really up to you how much stuff you put in.

Firecracker Bean Dip
I just made up the name right now....
Ok, you need:
Two or three cans of refried beans (depends on how many people are going to eat it, you can mash your own too in the blender with some broth or spices)
Salsa (either hot tomato sauce type or typical chunky red salsa)
One bag of shredded cheese (about 4 cups)
Finely chopped jalapeños (optional)
Sour cream (optional)
Chips (for dipping)
Basically, mix half the cheese, beans, salsa and jalapeños in a large oven proof casserole dish. Top with as much extra cheese as you'd like, and sour cream (if you want) and toss (not literally) into the oven until everything is bubbly and heated through.
Use potholders to take it out of the oven and make sure no curious birds are hanging around
Salmon Dip
First I'll say that three or four cans of tuna work perfectly well if you don't have salmon
You'll need
1 can of canned, cooked salmon
1 8-oz box of cream cheese
2 tbs. mayonaise
Some greek yogurt (you don't have to use mayonaise at all if you only want greek yogurt)
Pepper, parsley, garlic powder
Finely chopped celery, if you happen to want some
Mix it.
That's all.
This is very good with vegetable sticks and multigrain crackers
Sour Cream Dip
1 container (about 16 oz.) of sour cream
Chopped parsley
Pepper
Garlic Powder (fresh garlic is too strong for this)
Finely shredded Parmesan or Romano cheese
Mix everything in a bowl. Add enough cheese to give it a slightly chunky texture.
This is a favourite with veggies!
Now, keep in mind--these include lots of cholesterol and the like.
But I hear they cure things like tendonitis
Let me know if you enjoy any of these over the season!
