Hi! :) ~Apologies in advanced for such a wordy post~

So I'm looking to add some more ingredients to my "nutri-berries" (I really should come up with a different name for them) and was wondering people's opinions on some of the things I'd like to add :)

I did as much searching around as I could and everything I'm thinking of adding is budgie safe, however I'm not sure if things should be soaked, cooked, etc. I'll also be sure to offer small amounts of whatever I end up adding before actually adding it into the mix to ensure they don't have any adverse reactions to them :thumbsup:

So far my recipe includes:

-Seed mix (Hagen)
-Powdered and whole pellets (Harrisons & Zupreem)
-Finely chopped dried fruit (small amount, sugar free, sulphur dioxide free, etc.)
-Finely chopped frozen/thawed vegetables (Corn, carrots, peas)
-Finely chopped fresh vegetables (This often includes a bit of jalapeno)
-Finely chopped fresh fruit (small amount, mostly apples, pears, etc as they hold up well in the oven)
-Crushed egg shell (for calcium)
-Tiny bit of raw honey (to add a touch of sweetness, also helps bind it)
-1 egg (I add this raw once everything is mixed to help bind it. It cooks fully in the oven)
-Tiny bit of 100% virgin coconut oil on the outside once they're on the pan to ensure everything is soaked and no seeds are going to burn

And then everything is shaped into little balls and baked in the oven!

What I'm thinking of adding is: (For the "oilseeds" like sesame and flax, I would not use a large amount as they are on the fattier side)

-Chia Seeds (non-GMO) - Do these need to be rinsed/soaked? Cooked?
-Organic Quinoa - This will be soaked and cooked the same way you would cook rice
-Brown flax seed - I know these will gel up if you try to sprout them so I'm going to ground them up before adding them to the mix to prevent gelling
-Hulled sesame seeds - Rinsed/soaked?
-Hulled hemp seeds - Rinsed/soaked? Cooked?
-Hulled, raw sunflower seeds - Chopped. Rinsed/soaked?
-Hulled, raw pumpkin seeds - Soaked for an hour and chopped

Hopefully that all made sense! Any input is appreciated :D

As a side note; my girls get 1-2 of these each (depends on the size I make them however they generally have about 1 tsp of seed in each ball) crushed up, everyday along with about 2 tsp of loose seed each (given partly in the morning and partly in the evening), so overall that's about 3 tsp of seed each a day minus what they don't eat. Aside from that they both have a bowl of Harrison's super fine pellets in the cage at all times (which they've actually been picking at :eek: ), fresh veg daily, and fresh fruit one or two times a week. I'm also thinking of adding egg food from time to time, maybe once a week since I'm always afraid to give Bridgette too much protein in case she wants to lay eggs. Budgie eggs are a big no-no in this house hold :nono: , she went into full broody mode earlier last year but thankfully never layed. I really do not want to risk chronic laying or egg binding but I want to give my girls the best care/diet I can, oh the conflict :rolleyes:.

Some of your additions sound good too. Personally, I would leave out the chia seeds and keep the Flax seeds to a minimum. When soaked, they form a slimy gel around each seed.

In humans, when they hit our stomach, they expand up to 6 times their size. I have no idea if of how they would expand in a budgies crop, but the thought of it scares, me, so i generally stay away from them.

If someone has experience with Chia and Flax, I'd love to hear it too!

I sprout over 20 different seeds, legumes, and grains for my birds.

Some easy to find ingredients that you can also add in would be:
Brown rice, barley, Wheatberries, buckwheat, Fenugreek, all soaked or sprouted.
Amaranth (It's a teeny Tiny grain, smaller than quinoa)
Green peas, yellow peas, chickpeas, Lentils, Mung beans. All soaked or sprouted.

And these are a little more tricky to find, but my birds love them sprouted!
Broccoli, Clover, Mustard, Radish, Alfalfa.

Aha, thank you! :) I've never tried them (for obvious reasons ;)) but my picky girls like them so that must be worth something :giggle:

I was worried about what might happen if the seeds expanded in their crops as well, so I'll steer clear of the chia. I'll see how the flax does in liquid if I grind it up. Flax I know loses it's nutritional value if you grind it and then leave it, but I believe grinding it and then using it immediately will be okay. Only a small amount, of course.

I found brown rice and amaranth and will defiantly add those as well! I think they'll enjoy the brown rice quite a bit, I had no idea all the health benefits it had! I also found buckwheat groats and pearled or potted barley (not sure which would be best) and will look into those too :)

I'm not the best sprout-er in the world :rolleyes: but I have managed to get green lentils to sprout amazingly so I'll add those in too :thumbsup: (I hear rice and lentils together make for a complete protein)

Buckwheat groats have their hard outer shell already taken off. HOWEVER, I have seen people sucessfully sprout them without their shell. SO give it a try!

Pearled Barley already has the outer shell taken off, so it will not sprout. Also, it is usually broken pieces of barley that you get with Pearled Barley, and those will also not sprout.

You an still soak them though, and feed them to your birds, just don't expect to see any sprout tails from them. ;)
