Hey y’all, hope everybody has enjoyed the weekend! I have a question about Woody’s morning routine- I wake up early- like 4 am early and live in a small apartment. I know he hears me wake up but as long as I leave the lights off he seems content to wait til 6:30ish for me to turn on the lights and open his door. He is a free range parakeet so he’s out of the cage all day. My question is, is he ok waiting in the dark for two hours til it’s a decent hour for him to get up? He goes into his cage around 6-6:30 at night. I think he is ok- he acts like it’s fine but I wonder what is going thru his lil mind. Any thoughts would be appreciated!! Thanks. 🐦

It is perfectly fine, and indeed for the best, that Woody’s cage remain covered.

Budgies thrive on routine and it’s very good he has a set time of around 6:30 to start his day.

I ensure my budgies remain covered in the mornings until about 8:30

Good to know and thank you for the quick response. I feel bad knowing he is in there awake but now I feel a lil better knowing that is what’s BEST for my lil guy

I sleep in a little on my days off. If LoVey decides I've gotten enough sleep she starts chirping lol. One work day starts a little earlier and the other four at the same time. The days have different times but it's exactly the same every week. I always do the same thing when I get up though. I turn on the bedside light, then I turn on her radio and say "good morning LoVey." She takes it in stride. She does have a tendency to be adventurous and fearless so that may be part of why she is accepting of my different days routines. She does not like her cage covered. I think that may be because she's nosey about everything I do, along with that, she seams to just be more comfortable if she can see me. But she is very, very strongly bonded to me, to the point she starts flock calling calling to me the second I open the door to leave the room. It's a good thing I have no issues with being scrutinized all day lol. If I ever noticed, particularly on my sleep in days that she seemed bothered by it, I'd definitely adjust my routine to suit her.

Same with woody lol, we are super close and he’s a nosey lil dude as well so I only cover the back and sides of his cage at night. He is into whatever it is I am doing or eating. On the plus side, because of that, my snacks have become much healthier!!!! Alfalfa sprouts anyone?? :)

I'll often hide under a sheet if I'm eating something that isn't budgie safe. It's great though when I want to introduce her to new foods.

She makes me laugh all the time! She's is so charming! Interestingly enough, after I mentioned how she only let's me sleep in for so long, she didn't wake me up this morning. Saturday night at about 7:00, I decided that a big ole cup of Swiss mocha hazelnut coffee would be delicious. And it was yummy. However, that mega dose of caffeine kept me awake until 2am, followed quickly by my alarm going off at 5:30am ugh. It's as if she knew I needed to catch up on my sleep. She's the same way if I don't feel good. I am convinced she understands so much. And yes we do so much for them... pretty much rearrange our homes for their safety and happiness. And nothing brings us more joy than to do so!!!
