My English Budgie Dublin was the sweetest little girl ever. When she was young, she would follow me around my room an nestle up in my hair. When school got more difficult, I couldn't play with her as much. Now, whenever I try to play with her, she bites me really hard. She likes to be alone in her cage. She sits on my finger when she feels like it, and once in a while will land on my head. I want to start taming her again, so she can be how she used to. She is only about 8 months old, and here cere hasn't fully changed yet. Is it too late to tame her again. What basic steps should I take in re-taming her? :green budgie:

I don't have much experience in taming budgies (as I tame my budgies from the nest) but this same thing happened to me. I got really occupied with school and didn't handle my budgie as much as I should have. I bred him myself so he has been raised and handled by me since he was just out of the egg so we have an awesome connection. When I couldn't handle him often because of school he became really bitey and antisocial - he didn't become untame, he just bit a lot.

I basically just solved my problem by handling him more. I'd bet the reason for the biting is because the bird feels as if it's been socially neglected because you haven't been able to play with it. Not sure if this will work for you, but hopefully it will - your situation sounds a lot like what mine was and it worked for me.

Hopefully someone who knows a lot about training will answer your question if I'm wrong. Otherwise, I hope I helped at least a little bit. :001_smile:

Taming and Bonding with any bird is all about helping the bird learn to trust you.

You need to go back to the very beginning and work on establishing a trusting bond with her.

You should never grab your budgie or force her to be touched.
To bond with your budgie, you need to build her trust in you.
She will have to learn over time that you will not hurt her, grab her and try to force her to allow you to hold her.

To build your budgie's trust, sit by her cage and read, talk or sing quietly to her for a period of at least 10-15 minutes, 3 or 4 times day. After the 2nd or 3rd day, rest your hand on the outside of the cage when you talk to her so he'll learn that your hand is safe and will not hurt her.

After a week, rest your hand inside the cage when you talk.
Don't make sudden moves, don't try to touch her.
Let her get used to the idea that the hand is now in her safe place and not harming her.

After 2 weeks, begin moving your hand slowly toward your budgie. If she becomes agitated, stop moving your hand and just hold very still until she calms down. When she's comfortable with your hand near her, you can offer her a bit of millet or a few seeds. In a few more days, you can begin your taming and bonding sessions.

Always work at your budgie's pace.
Move slowly and talk reassuringly and calmly to her whenever you interact with her.

Keep training sessions short.
Respect your budgie's space and learn to read her body language.
Not all budgies want to be handled.
