So I recently got two budgies, about a week ago, and am wanting to make sure I have everything I need for their happiness.

I originally got the this cage -

(Still in the process of cleaning it out)

But I realized pretty quick it wasn't going to work. The worker at the pet store told me to get a tall cage rather than a wide one, and despite my research and knowing that was wrong I took her word for it. So just the yesterday I got them one that was 30x18x18, and they're already so much happier!
Here's what it looks like now -

My question is, does it look like they have everything they need, and does it look big enough for them? I want to give them the best I can possibly give them, so any tips are highly appreciated! This is my first time ever owning birds and their happiness is my priority. Thanks!

Hey there! Your budgies are adorable! The blue and white budgie looks a lot like my little one!
In regards to your cage, it looks fine, just make sure you replace any plastic or wooden dowel perches with natural wood perches. I can't see anything that is outwardly bad, but perhaps a more experienced member could tell you more.

In the meantime, this link should help you out!

Good luck with your two little ones!!

Thanks for the response! I didn't know the dowels were bad for them, I'll have to see if I can find a few long branches for them :biggrin1:

Hi Keely and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

Congratulations on your beautiful budgies! Your boy and girl are precious :)

I agree that the cage looks great! Replacing the dowels with natural wood perches will be a great improvement. Additionally, it isn't necessary to leave a whole sprig of millet or a honey treat stick in the cage at all times. Over time, these treats are too fatty for full time consumption, so they should be used as treats only. Instead, you can clip some parsley, basil, romaine lettuce, etc. to the cage bars so they can have some greens!

Also, be sure to look through the forum's many Budgie Articles and "stickies" (threads "stuck" to the top of each subform for easy reference) to stay up to date on all the best practices for caring for budgies. If you have any questions after reading through everything, be sure to ask as we'd love to help! :p

I look forward to seeing more of your darling budgies soon! :photo:

Cheers!

Hi Keely

I think your cage looks nice. :)
Personally, I'd just take out those two long dowel perches. I don't think they're needed and it would give a bit of flight space in the centre of the cage.
You may find that you need to purchase a second swing as budgies often squabble over just one.
When rearranging my cage, I also find it useful to view the cage from above. That way I can easily see if one perch is likely to lead to soiling of a lower perch, and can adjust positions slightly.

One other thing, is the placement of that cool little trilby hat. Whilst it looks attractive placed there, when your birds are given out of cage time they will likely destroy it; either by chewing it or perching & pooping on it ;)

Cute little birds!

Your cage is a great first home for your two little cuties.

The one you chose is the minimum recommended size for two budgies :2thumbs:

Someday in the future, if you decide to upgrade, think about getting a Prevue Hendryx F040 Flight Cage (I have several and they are great)
I have my two female budgies in a cage this size. :)

Prevue Hendryx F040

I'd definitely put at least one more swing in Victor and Yuri's cage.
I have multiple swings in all my birds' cages - they LOVE them.

Best wishes!

Thanks for the replies!
I did notice that they tend to bicker over the swing lol, guess I should fix that.
I think I might try to find a longer natural perch for where the high dowel is right now. While I think Victor would be fine without it, their wings were already clipped when I got them and Yuri has a bit of trouble getting around. He tends to get too scared to jump when one perch is too far from the next, but that might just be something he needs to learn to get over? I'm not sure, really.
And the Prevue Henry xF040 is exactly what I was looking at upgrading to when I had the extra cash! I actually want to get a cage big enough for up to 4 someday, but as of right now I still live with my parents and the two of them are loud enough as is lol, I wouldn't want to torture them like that. I didn't believe any of this talk about budgies being addictive, but gosh..... I understand now <3
