That video was taken a while ago and he knows and has learned more words and phrases since then and he often makes his own sentences using random words. He even talks in his sleep! I've noticed that he occasionally does pick up short phrases on his own as well. I would estimate he can learn a completely new short phrase in a few days of repetition but he does have his favorites which he defaults to if I don't go through the whole list occasionally. I've had many budgies that lived full lives but only one other that was a talker. If I try to make a phone call he thinks he is supposed to fly to my shoulder and talk into the microphone as much as I do which is always good for a laugh. It would be interesting to see if he would 'talk' to another bird if he was presented with a mate or if he would revert to chirping. I've heard stories of one budgie teaching another to talk but they may be only stories. I agree, he talks as well as Disco with a smaller vocabulary, but he's only 1.5 years old or so and has a lot of time to learn. What I find very interesting is that he has figured out that to communicate with me he must talk english even if he uses the wrong words and very seldom chirps!

It is interesting how they have certain things that they like to repeat even if they have a large vocabulary, I would love to know what is going on inside that little head as they are talking and what makes any one bird such a good talker and others not. None of my current budgies talk but the ones I had as a kid did, not a big vocabulary but a few short sentences.
