Male budgie pulling tail of Female

634 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  FaeryBee
So I have 2 budgies, male named Baloo and female named Lucky. Baloo has started in the last few weeks to pull on luckys tail and/or wings. It isn’t often but at least once a day. They’ve been together a year and get along well otherwise but I’m just wondering what it means?

The behavior may be hormonal or it may be the male trying to show dominance over the female.
Please answer the questions below.

Are you doing everything necessary to prevent breeding?
Are either (or both) of the two budgies in breeding condition at this time?

When you have a mixed gender pair, it is very important to do everything necessary to prevent breeding.
Budgies are much healthier and happier when they are never bred.

Rearranging their cage frequently will help tremendously.
Please be sure you never put a nest box or anything that could be used as a nesting site in their cage.
When they come into condition, you need to limit the light they get to 8 hours a day and limit the amount of protein in their diet.

No breeding here for sure! They don’t cuddle, preen each other or feed each other.
They are usually only in their cage at night otherwise they have free flight in our living room, with plenty of places to play. I have been watching them and their behaviour over the last week and he does it when she tries to fly away from him. She shows no interest in him other than to antagonize him.

Maybe he's getting even with her for antagonizing him!
