My Country

Well this is Mother Nature doing its thing...I can't get over how much snow you have... In Australia we do have snow but this time of the year other parts of Australia are having bush fires...... I think that Mother Nature is giving us a challenge with all sorts of nature all around the world...I know this pome isn't for snow but it is about our country and is really well wrote... Thought I'd share it...

My Country...

The love of field and coppice,
Of green and shaded lanes.
Of ordered woods and gardens
Is running in your veins,
Strong love of grey-blue distance
Brown streams and soft dim skies
I know but cannot share it,
My love is otherwise.

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror -
The wide brown land for me!

A stark white ring-barked forest
All tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains,
The hot gold hush of noon.
Green tangle of the brushes,
Where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops
And ferns the warm dark soil.

Core of my heart, my country!
Her pitiless blue sky,
When sick at heart, around us,
We see the cattle die -
But then the grey clouds gather,
And we can bless again
The drumming of an army,
The steady, soaking rain.

Core of my heart, my country!
Land of the Rainbow Gold,
For flood and fire and famine,
She pays us back threefold -
Over the thirsty paddocks,
Watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness
That thickens as we gaze.

An opal-hearted country,
A wilful, lavish land -
All you who have not loved her,
You will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours,
Wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country
My homing thoughts will fly.

Lyn,

I've moved your post over into its own thread which is more appropriate. :)

Very nice poem -- please put who wrote it into the post down at the bottom. It is always important to give credit to the author.

Thanks!

Probably the most beautiful poem written about Australia. I still get chills up and down my spine whenever I read it or hear it recited. The second verse is probably the one that describes this country best.

Thank you Lyn for posting it. Very appropriate as it is Australia Day tomorrow.

The poem is really beautiful, thanks for sharing it with us, Lyn! :)

I hope the fires get under control soon and there is as little damage as possible, and the people (firefighters included) stay safe.

My

Wonderful poem , Lyn. Australia is truly a magical place with such extremes to balance and the amazing strength of man and bird and beast to bring joy to the heart. I pray that the forest fires work to heal the land with as little loss of life and abode as possible to nudge things back a little closer to center. You and Indi have fun while your mom is a way. Aww, such a beautiful & patriotic poem and I wish I can celebrate Austalia Day with y'all in AU. I've always wanted to visit the land down under and take in all the enchanting locale and wonders like cute little koala, kangaroos, and of course...Lyndigo! Speaking of which, I think there should also be a Lyndigo Day that honors our world famous and adorable Aussie duo:D:party3::aus:
