Hey, I’m really new to this and I got two male budgies a couple days ago and I’ve noticed that one of them stays puffed up a lot. If I had to guess I’d say that he’s about 3–4 months old. The only times that he isn’t puffed up is when he’s eating, playing, or flying around. So any time he sits, he’s puffed up and I wanted to ask if I’m worrying over nothing since there’s nothing else that is out of the ordinary? He was doing well at the store I got him at to my knowledge and wasn’t puffed up. Could it be stress?

He's beautiful, he does not appear to be puffed up, is his posture like that in the picture all the time, is the vent area clean and do his dropping look normal?
Thank you! His posture is like that most of the time, but his droppings look normal and I’ve seen him clean his vent multiple times and he was pretty happy to take a spray bath today. And wow I thought he looked kind of puffed, I guess the other budgie might just be a bit skinnier so in comparison this one seems big😅

Mine can change size like some kind of chameleon. I’ve found a few reasons for him being fluffed up for a few hours at a time. Then he can turn into a sleek dart the moment he wants to fly or is even alert to get ready to fly.

Reasons for being fluffled up:

He’s cold
He wants to take a nap
He’s molting
He’s hormonal
He knows he’s cute like that and I’ll come tell him how cute he is

But if he’s puffed up all the time or for no apparent reason, or in conjunction with some other symptoms, he needs to be checked out by a vet.
