New albino budgie. Male or female? and some questions..

824 Views 11 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  FaeryBee
I got a new albino budgie and my 1st one ever... He is 3-4 months old and male as previous owner said... he was dirty (never did a bath before) and his wings was cut by last owner, also he was feeding him only millets.
i own him for 10 days now.
I tried hard to make him eat anything else than millets.. but he did after 3 days, now he eats main food and some pellets , also he make baths on his plastic pool alone and got a lot cleaner.
He is allready tamed with me, he sit and eat on me and try to feed me some times..

I want to buy him a partner soon.. and i want to be sure if it is male or female (i dont trust last owner),
Also i want him to grow new wings because he cant fly (he go on walls and everyting) how much time he need to replace his cut wings?
BTW. i watched maany videon on youtube (budgie world), i want to learn everything for him to stay healthy. i will also search on this forum i found today

Albinos can be tricky to determine gender when young because the ceres look so similar, StarlingWings is expert at this so I will leave that to her. It can take up to 6 months or more for all the flight feathers to molt out and new ones grow in so it will be a while before he/she can fly. Your cage looks to be quite small and is definitely not large enough for two birds.

Yes i know that about my cage... saddly i did not made the research needed before.. ofcourse i will replace it with the 2nd budgie ill buy with much bigger, i will make them stay seperate for some days.
edit: thank you for the topic you send
Quarantining a new bird should be for at least 30 days Quarantine IS Necessary!
It would also be best to get a bird that is the same gender as your albino.

I read about this on Google "Because females are more prone to territorial fighting over space, it is less advisable to keep two females together. Female parakeets bicker more among themselves, stand their own ground, and their disruptive arguing leads to squawking beak duels that disrupts everyone" is it correct or not? I don't want any breeding. if it's a female and I get a male can I prevent breeding?

edit: I found this.
I think I can find everything I need in this forum! thank you

Your little one looks like a female to me.
When @StarlingWings is next on line and has time, she will make the final determination with regard to your budgie's gender.

There is no guarantee two birds will get along whether they are the same gender or mixed genders.
Each and every budgie is unique. Two females can get along together quite well. I had two females that were inseparable.

The purpose of this forum is to promote the BEST PRACTICES in the care of budgies for their optimal Health and Well-Being

Locating an Avian Veterinarian

When you have mixed genders, it is very important to do everything necessary to prevent breeding.
Budgies are much healthier and happier when they are never bred.

There are many things to take into consideration before getting another bird.
Do you really want another pet

1. If you decide to get another budgie in the future, please be sure to observe quarantine for the new budgie.
Quarantine means housing the new bird in a different cage in a different room than the current bird (as far away from the room the current bird is in as possible) for a period of 35-45 days.
Budgies mask symptoms when they are ill. Symptoms may not show up for over two weeks.
Often you will not even realize your bird is not well. Many budgie illnesses are airborne which is why you need to quarantine your new bird in a completely different room.

Quarantine your new bird!
Yes - Quarantine IS necessary

It is also a good idea to always take a new budgie in to see an Avian Vet for a "well-birdie" check-up. This allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet and the vet can establish a baseline for your bird in case of any future illnesses or injuries.
If there are no Avian Vets in your area, then finding an Exotic Pet Veterinarian who has experience in dealing with small birds is the next best option.

3. Flock Dynamics

4. Where do you plan to get the new bird?
If the time comes when you decide to get your budgie a friend, I highly recommend considering getting a bird of the same gender from either a bird rescue organization or a shelter.
These budgies need a good, safe and loving forever home.

Why you should buy from a Reputable/Ethical Breeder rather than a Big Box Pet Store

5. Vet Expense and Housing
Do you have the time, finances, etc to devote to another bird?
Are you ready, willing and able to house the new budgie separately on a permanent basis if it does not get along with your current bird after quarantine?

Hi there and welcome to the forums!

She is beautiful and is 100% a female budgie. As mentioned above, females can be best of friends just like two males and generally speaking personality is the main determining factor. You'll find the information you need in the link below regarding female budgies!

Common Myths about Female Budgies

Meanwhile, it's great that you're working hard to give your budgies the best life possible. It's great to have you on the forums and feel free to ask questions after reading through all the links above as we'd love to help!

thank you and faerybee.. i will buy a 2nd budgie and a huge cage tommorow for them. she is screaming when i move away from her cage or im leaving for work.
ill do my research on the forum but I don't have enough time now.
So you think it's better for them to get same gender? personally I prefer a different one (not for breeding purposes) but i want to examine the difference on genders on my own.
My new budgie will be not tamed at all so I have work to do with him/her
Having two budgies of the same gender is preferable as indicated in my previous post.

Best wishes!
