Hi all. It's been a day since I got my first budgie from the pet store, and as there are trees outside my window, there are a lot of birds. My new budgie is constantly calling out to them really loudly, and when he doesn't hear them anymore, he starts getting frustrated - flying around the cage and screaming. Should I expect this behaviour to go away by itself, or should I try to drown out the sounds of other birds with my TV/music?

I try to have his cage on my table so he can get used to me. But I can't have him screaming into my ear incessantly for the whole day. Any advice?

What your budgie is doing is perfectly normal.
Birds make noise so that is something you need to accept if you plan to own a budgie. If it is bothering you after the very first day, you may want to reconsider your decision. Doing comprehensive research before getting any pet is always recommended.

Thanks. I'm fine with the loud chirps and all but the screaming was making me anxious as I thought my little guy was stressing out, but he has been grinding/clicking his beak for much of today so I believe he is doing fine~

I'm very glad to hear that your little fellow is settling in. It generally takes about 2 weeks time for them to become comfortable with their new environment.

The fact he is grinding and clicking his beak now is a very good sign! :thumbup:

Have you named your budgie yet?
We'd love to see some pictures once s/he is settled in enough for you to take some to share.

I named him Michael after the Archangel since he's yellow and I just finished my Supernatural marathon(lol) :angel:

He's able to eat in front of me now, despite me being so close to his food, although he still eats really quickly.

I'm also wondering about his eyes. They seem red and have that ring of skin around it. Is that normal? Never seen it in other budgies.

Hi and Welcome to you and Michael, (love Supernatural, too - we have a cat named Castiel lol)...your budgie is Beautiful and his red eyes are natural for this yellow colouring (Lutino)...it is part of their behaviour to 'converse' with outside birds...and it will take some time before he is comfortable with his surroundings and you, fully - working on 'Budgie Time' isn't fast:biggrin1:...lots of great advice above ...looking forward to seeing you around the forum.

Michael is beautiful and Susan has given you an excellent information explaining red eyes are normal for the Lutino mutation.

Was the picture you posted taken in natural light?
I'm seeing a a lot of paleness around the nares on my computer screen.
Is Michael's cere a smooth translucent pinkish/purple all over or is it actually very light around the nares as it shows in the picture?

Michael is beautiful! I agree that his cere is pretty pale-- I think "he" is actully a "she"!

Michael's cere is really shiny because my light comes from the ceiling. When I look closely it's actually a really light purple. Does that mean Michael is a she?! :imagesCAUZORA7:

Anyway, Michael and I had our first duet today :biggrin1: I didn't realise he was singing along with me until he stopped when I did, and continued when I did too. Although it only lasted 2 minutes because he decided he was hungry and started screaming before jumping onto his food dish. (I have no idea why he always has to scream before he eats)

On my big screen iMAC the photo looks like much of the cere around the nostrils is very pale (whitish) suggesting female (Michelle). However if the whole cere is pinkish-purply through out "Mike's" a boy. Beautiful budgie either way.
