We don't have our Budgie yet (a few more weeks), he is about 5-6 weeks old now, DNA test is pending. We will likely name him Cowboy (if he is in fact a boy). Pretty excited to start spoiling our new baby. We go visit him and his parents, siblings about once a week. He is the fattest, most calm of the 4 chicks. Just here trying to learn as much as I can before he comes home. Buying him from a breeder locally.

Hi there and :welcome: to the forums!

Cowboy is such a cute little bird

Congratulations on your soon-to-be new family member! You've certainly come to the right place to learn and review all you need to know to spoil little Cowboy. :D

Be sure to read through the stickies, or important threads located at the top of each subforum, to review basic information about budgies and the forums here. If you have any questions afterwards, be sure to ask as we'd love to help!

Budgies can be accurately sexed visually by the time they are weaned, because even as chicks, they are sexually dimorphic (meaning you can tell the genders apart). Young males will have a pink or purplish cere with a pearly sheen, and young females will have a pale, more chalky looking white, blue, or beige cere. The male's pink cere will mature into the royal blue, and females will have a darker brown cere when they are in breeding condition, reverting back to the whitish colour otherwise. ;)

It's great you're doing all the research you can so far and are well prepared to bring your little guy home :p We can't wait to meet him!

Hope to see you around, and if you have any questions after reading through the forums, please do ask as we'd love to help :)

Cheers!

Thank you all for the warm welcome! Here is one more photo of Cowboy at about 3 weeks old (he's the fat one starring straight out of the box while the others are trying to mash themselves into the corners) budgie baby 3 weeks.jpg

I have been learning so much already (fairly certain he is a he based on his "nose").
Almost upset with myself for believing all the hype about males only talking/mimicking and being so much better pets than females. Oh well. DNA male or female we will keep this mellow, beautiful bird as our #1 choice. We put our deposit in first so we get first pick. I was worried but not anymore.

Thanks again everyone! I will try to get photos of mom and dad next time I visit as well. Dad is very, very protective!

Hi! :welcome: to Talk Budgies

Cowboy is a cutie and I'm sure you're getting excited about bringing him home.

Have you bought him a cage yet? Try to get the biggest one possible ensuring the spacing between the bars is no more than 1/2". ;)

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

You'll find most of your basic questions about budgies and caring for them will have been answered after you've read through all of them.

This is the cage we have gotten for him.

added a concrete perch, a rope perch & a wooden ladder. Also have been building a play gym on the top with another rope perch (long bendy one) and plastic rings.

Don't want to overwhelm him with toys right away so most of those are put away and will be brought out a couple at a time and rotated so he doesn't get too bored.

One more thing I have to tell you all today, I was explaining to my two youngest children (8 & 10) how the bird will be very scared when we first bring him home. "Imagine if a huge giant came here and took you to their home and I could do nothing about it! You would be frightened and not know if you were safe or not, right?"

I could see this thought forming in my son, across his face so I spoke up, because I was starting to have the same thought myself briefly. Why are we doing this? kinda look.

"He's born to be a pet and we know we will take the very best care of him always and love him. If not us then someone else would take him for a pet. We are not capturing him from the wild. We just need to be patient and take lots of time making sure he knows he is safe and we will not hurt him."

I could see the anxiety melt from my son's face and my daughter just said "Ok, we can do that." LOL.

IT'S A BOY!!!

Just got the call with the DNA results! They were all pulled from their nest box today too I was told. Breeder needs to monitor them outside the box for at least one week. Depending how that goes we can then bring him home!!! And we can visit and hold him/interact more with him too.

So I was finally successful in getting my husband to say goodbye to his electric, Teflon coated, waffle maker! Never mind that the stupid thing only gets used once or twice a year and takes up unnecessary space. It's bad for birdie (and us!). I got rid of all the Non-stick pots and pans years ago but he has been adamant about keeping the waffle maker.

I do have to go out and find him a cast iron one now though. One of the unforeseen costs of getting a new Budgie baby :)
