New lovebird eeeeeeeeeek

Hi all

Well I went to the local mom and pop pet shop today to get buddy a few new toys, I made the HUGE mistake (lies) of passing by the bird section.

There was this beautiful Fischer’s Lovebird I could just not take my eyes off, he was listed as sold however. I talked with the owner who said the person who reserved that bird normally does stuff like saying I want this and never shows up or does so 4 months later.

Well I fell in love, I wanted that bird, he called the guy and the number was out of service. $300 later, I have a new bird, a new cage, new food and toys and he is hand fed! Woot.

he is still nervous of course new cage but in the store I held him and no biting or anything, about 3 months old and so dang cute!

I can't take a pic now but I will tomorrow, right now he is exploring the cage, Buddy and him (yeah no name yet) are separated but they do chirp at each other once in a while.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND he just drank in front of me, happy new papa here :)

Is there a birdie AA? I might need help lol

Barry

P.S Deborah you have links to everything, is there anything special I need to know about my new boy? I found a few links on Google but I trust this site better :)

Wow, Barry, congrats on the new addition! I bet he is just sweeter than pie ;)

Sounds like you have Acute Bird Obsession Disorder (ABOD) and there really isn't a cure except for learning to control your urges to buy birds :p

I can't wait to meet him! Any name ideas yet?
Oh, and there's a subforum around here called Lovebird Lovers, you can post all the funny stories and pictures you want over there!
I'm sure Deb and Ana, our resident lovebird experts, will be around to tell you more :D

I swear I did not go in to buy a bird, but I saw this guy and just fell in love with him, I was not able to help myself. But man oh man he is a CUTIE!

Pics tomorrow I swear :)

BTW: Does ABOD have a 12 step program? :p

Oh wow!! That is :jumping: exciting news! :D

Do you know if the little fellow was DNA tested to determine the gender?

The most important thing I would suggest is to be sure to socialize your baby with other members of the family so he doesnt decide you belong ONLY to him. :)

I'll let Ana give you the majority of the lovebird info because she is much more an expert than I.

I'm SO looking forward to seeing pictures once he's all settled in. Congratulations!

Hiya Deb :)

Yep he is a he :) and as I am single with just Stella (my Boxer) and Buddy there is nobody else for him to bond to.

He has checked out every inch of his new home and right now is in a corner looking kinda tired, bed time for him and Buddy.

I took a pic before but it came out yuk, I will wait for tomorrow in natural light so you all can see him in all his cuteness :)

Need a name, was thinking "shortstuff" but that seems a bit long lol

Barry
You could always name him "ShortStuff" and call him "Shorty". :D

I know you are going to be as head-over-heels about him as I am about Peachy.
There is something that is so darn adorable about lovebirds that it is just beyond description.

Whenever Peachy lies in my hand and turns his little head back and forth with his eyes closed loving every second of the scritches he gets or snuggles up under my chin or decides to hide inside my shirt -- I can forgive him all the naughtiness he gets into. :giggle: (well, almost all. ;))

Question...

Petshop told me to never let him and Buddy together as he is much bigger he can hurt Buddy.

They are calling to each other and I have read that they can be together, Ideas?

can I put the cages close to each other (of course once quarantine is over) can they even be in the same cage together?

I kinda like that idea as they are both the same age and hopefully will make friends. Of course if I see any signs of aggression one will come out right away.

You can definitely put their cages side by side but you should never cage a lovebird with a budgie.

Your lovebird and budgie may become friendly since they are both so young. However, if they are having out-of-cage time together they should always be under constant supervision.

Lovebirds are bigger in stature and have a much stronger beak (and bite) than a budgie. It would only take one bite and Buddy could be quite severely injured.

Lovebirds love to bite the toes of other birds.

I move Pedro and Poppy's cage into the bathroom when I allow Sunny and Sparky to have out-of-cage time in the bedroom.

I can't even allow Peachy to land on Pedro and Poppy's cage because Poppy would bite his toes off in a second flat if given half a chance to do so. Sometimes she even chases Pedro around in their cage trying to bite his feet!

Even though all three are lovebirds, I've never allowed Peachy to interact with Pedro and Poppy except when their cages are placed side by side.
Pedro and Poppy were rescues and are bonded to one another.
Peachy was hand fed and is a total "people-bird".
I simply won't take the chance of Pedro and Poppy becoming aggressive with Peachy.

Peachy is allowed out in the same room when Sunny and Sparky are out and generally ignores them.

However, if I take Peachy downstairs and Skipper and Scooter are out of their cage I have to be on high alert. Skipper and Scooter simply will not leave Peachy alone.
He ignores them unless they come into his "space" and then he'll try to bite at them.

If I have Peachy on my shoulder then both Skipper and Scooter want to be on me at the same time, which is fine as long as they stay on one side of me and Peachy's on the other.
Invariably though, they want to land right next to him.

Congratulations on your new lovie, I'd also like to officially welcome you to the never ending joys of lovebird ownership!!
You'll have so much fun with your little friend and I also can't wait to see your new boy! Just wait till you see him all wet, they love to bathe!! :D
I am the very proud owner of 5 fischers and 1 blue masked lovebird.

Regarding their diet, they have a similar one when compared to the budgies. You can offer the same type of veggies, sprouted seed and fruit, a good quality seed mix (one that contains sunflower seed, buckwheat as well as all the other seed you can see on a budgie's seed mix) and pellets as well.
You can go for a cockatiel seed mix or a lovebird seed mix. The latter is much more expensive (at least in my country it is) and since it has the same type of seed mix, I choose to give mine the cockatiel mix. I also make my own mix with chosen seed. Egg food is also a must when moulting.

Some time ago, I wrote an essay on my experience with this amazing species of bird, you can have a better idea how they are. :)

EDIT: Regarding the possible interactions between your lovebird and budgie, it all comes down to personality and the way your lovebird was raised as far as socialization goes at an early age. If he has a good temperament and overall sweet disposition there are good chances they can get along and be friends and have out of cage play time together.
My lovebird Khaleesi had contact and a closer interaction with the budgies while growing up and he has never shown any kind of aggression nor threat towards the budgies. Khaleesi is very good friends with my budgie Luigi, every time they meet Luigi makes sure to give plenty of kisses and some food to Khaleesi. Even though I have full trust on my lovie I still closely supervise their time together, because Luigi can be somewhat overwhelming to Khaleesi and also too hyper for him.

Update, Pics and a name

Hello all,

Well just about 24 hours with me now and he is settling in, last night he found his food and water right away and explored his cage.

Today he is finally going on his perches (his fav seems to be the rope one) and has found his honey stick treat :)
He is still scared of the hand but calming down and chirping away and when I answer him he chirps more and seems to love it :)

Now the name..... no clue why but I was talking to him before and out it popped.

So my fellow friends pics attached so, TB members meet Merlin :)

Rain here today so these are the best pics I could get of the always moving lil ******, I will try and take more tomorrow when we get some sun

Barry

P.S. Cathy...... You will finally get one, I know you will, look at that pretty face :p

Barry, he is a handsome little fellow, and typical of the reason why I stay away from birds that are for sale of just about all species...:D

I think Tucker fits him pretty well too...:)
